Summary

Simplot Plant Sciences consists of a dynamic group of collaborative scientists working on genetic improvement of crop plants. The Molecular Breeder is an experienced scientist who enjoys working to identify and execute new genetic strategies to develop and validate new traits. The Molecular Breeder will evaluate and critique the scientific literature to identify new technologies and gene candidates which confer advantageous effects on the metabolism, physiology, or architecture of the plant, producing fruit of increased quality, composition, disease resistance or yield. The Molecular Breeder is a collaborative member of a team who is self-motivated and possesses a growth mindset. Excellent communication and organizational skills are essential, as well as a strong interest and capability to innovate.

Key Responsibilities

• Provides technological innovation, including developing new traits and strategies.
• Performs well-designed, rigorous genetic studies to identify candidate genes.
• Supports overall scientific progress of the team by continuously seeking improvements, sharing knowledge and skills, and demonstrating a growth mindset.
• Takes on challenging tasks, remaining flexible and productive when faced with ambiguity.
• Works in the laboratory, greenhouse, and field to support and advance projects, as needed.
• Actively, frequently, and effectively communicates with others.
• Serves as a principal investigator on one or more trait discovery or enabling projects.

Typical Education

• PhD in plant breeding, genetics, molecular biology, or related field.

Relevant Experience

• Industry experience preferred.
• Experience with molecular breeding, including association analysis and fine mapping.
• Strong computational and statistical skills are desired, including experience modeling genotype and environmental effects.
• Experience working collaboratively and independently in support of team goals.
• Exhibits leadership skills and people management potential.
• Machine learning experience is desired.
• Experience with polyploid, self-incompatible plant species is valuable.

Other Requirements

• Qualities you should possess include determination, integrity, innovation, productivity, collaborative, and flexibility with a growth mindset. Effective verbal and written communication essential.
• Limited travel to scientific meetings 1-2 times/year.
