Job Description


We are seeking an Assistant Director of Performance Activities. Reporting to the 555 Penn IT/AV Unit Director, the Assistant Director of Performance Activities is responsible for managing all technical aspects of concerts and events at 555 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, DC, for the 375-seat theater and multimedia studio center for audio and video recordings. The Assistant Director of Performance Activities will support a variety of events including music and dance performances from the Peabody Institute to lectures and presentations to University Symposia. The Assistant Director of Performance Activities acts as a liaison to all Johns Hopkins divisions and among the various individuals involved in production, to ensure excellent and safe production. The successful candidate will be a motivated, proactive, client-oriented leader. The candidate will be organized and provide excellent customer service experience for clients. Attention to detail, customer service focus, and a positive work ethic are a must. Must be able to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends as needed to appropriately staff departmental activities.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • The Assistant Director of Performance Activities works to provide a professional and safe performance environment to the 555 Penn students, faculty, staff, patrons, and guests.
  • Leads the Audio and Video Production Managers and their technician staff members in supporting audio and video recordings in the theater or broadcast studio.
  • Leads the audio and video production teams in providing all stage, production, sound, lighting, and technical needs of performances at 555 Penn to include lighting, audio visual, administrative, live video and audio mixing, sound reinforcement, setting up A/V equipment, microphones, and all stage management.
  • Works in close partnership with representatives from various JHU divisions and outside renters to support event production, audio visual, sound, and curricular needs of the school to achieve an excellent production and a quality learning opportunity.
  • Draws on creative and technical experience to guide talent in best practices for effective audio-visual presentations. Provides consultative services to faculty, staff, and students in the use of supporting multimedia technology to provide the best content presentation experience.
  • Consults with Communications Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) (content producers and department administrators) to understand the requirements and goals of communications content.
  • Utilizing creative and technical knowledge, work with SMEs in the development of content such as studio, field, lecture hall, conference room recordings, videos, podcasts, and other emerging communications mechanisms.
  • Provide leadership to ensure a consistent, client-focused team effort is applied to operations. Supervises and administers production crew and scheduling events with the appropriate number of staff and with the necessary skill set and training to see the assigned events through.
  • Develops and documents support processes, implements technical staff training in the execution of those processes and evaluates performance.
  • Creates and develops necessary policies and procedures to improve the production department\'s ability to support the school\'s events.
  • Enforces safety standards and preventative maintenance and training programs, enforcing school-wide policy and procedures while making recommendations as necessary.
  • Acts as primary contact for all performance activities regarding logistics and arrangements for ensembles and operas.
  • Analyzes team needs and evaluates new equipment. Conducts product testing and recommends purchases based on industry research and reviews, combined with product piloting results.
  • Collaborates with vendors and team members to assist with the introduction and installation of new systems/technology.
  • Maintains currency on latest products and technologies by reading trade publications, attending seminars, and developing and maintaining vendor contacts.
  • Manages and assists audio and video teams with special events and projects, providing A/V and multimedia expertise, and performing other duties as assigned or requested.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor\'s Degree in film, television, cinemaphotography or video production.
  • 5 to 7 years of experience working in television, technical theater, public media, film industry or video production.
  • Experience producing across platforms, including live stream video, post-production broadcasting, multimedia production using major social media tools.
  • Advanced knowledge of broadcast studio production, video mixing, audio mixing, sound reinforcement stage production.
  • Management experience with familiarity of business to contractor/vendor interactions and project management practices.
  • Professional demeanor, superior communication skills, comfort in high-pressure situations, adaptable, solutions-oriented problem solver.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills with proven ability to effectively prioritize workload.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends as needed to appropriately staff departmental activities and the performance schedule.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, required.
  • This position does not allow for education or experience substitutions.
