POSITION SUMMARY:

The Associate Director Accounting is responsible for the day-to-day operations and management of the Boston Medical Center Accounting department staff, which has the primary responsibility for accurate and timely issuance of monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements for BMC and its consolidating entities and for preparing financial packages for reporting to various Health System Boards. The Associate Director of Accounting is responsible for coordinating and facilitating the completion of the annual fiscal year-end audit, and any needed stub audits and for the production of year-end financial reports and for bond holders. Oversees month-end general ledger closings, account reconciliations and financial statement preparation. Follows established policies and procedures to maintain integrity of the general ledger and financial statements according to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

  • Responsible for the coordination and control of all BMC Health System accounting functions, including all matters related to the monthly close process, GL account reconciliations and accurate, timely financial reporting.
  • Primary responsibility for producing monthly financial statements for the following BMC entities: Boston Medical Center Corporation (BMC), BMC Health System (BMCHS), Boston Affordable Care Organization (BACO), Boston Medical Center Integrated Care Services (BMCICS) and Cornerstone Health System LLC (CHS).
  • Coordinates with BMC Health Plan Controller and Boston University Medical Group\xe2\x80\x99s Controller to ensure their monthly financials are done accurately and consistently with the rest of the BMC System, and in time to produce monthly, quarterly and year-end consolidated financials for the Health System board and committees.
  • Oversees all financial statement audits in conjunction with the Accounting Managers. Communicates and maintains relationship with external auditors to facilitate the annual year-end financial statement audits and any other audit activities.
  • Coordinates with contracted audit firms for the production of both of BMC captive corporation financials (BMCIC and BMCIC of Vermont). Ensures that contracted firms have appropriate controls for ease of consolidation and necessary audit documentation for the consolidated year-end system audit.
  • Collaborate with the Financial Information System (FIS) and Treasury departments to establish accounting structures, procedures and financial reporting for new entities that are part of the consolidated financial statements, or to reflect new businesses and new FASB reporting requirements
  • Ensure timely tax returns filing (IRS Form 990, 990-T, 1120-F, 4720 as well as various state tax returns) for the following entities: Boston Medical Center Corporation (BMC), BMC Health System (BMCHS), Boston Affordable Care Organization (BACO), BMC Integrated Care Services (BMCICS), East Concord Medical Foundation (ECMF), BMCIC and BMCIC Vermont captives and Cornerstone Health System LLC (CHS)
  • Continuously improve the month-end financial closing processes to ensure accurate and timely preparation and issuance of the monthly financial statements, as well as to reduce the number of days and manual tasks required to close.
  • Oversees the year-end finance close process. Communicates and maintains relationship with external auditors to facilitate the annual audit cycle and other audit activities. Schedules and coordinates the preparation of requested accounting documentation, reports, and reconciliations. Ensures that all year end reporting is accurate, that footnotes are sound and that the audit is completed in a timely manner.
  • Provide annual budgets and forecasts to the Budget department. These include Accounting Department budget, various Corporate Services line budgets, various Benefits line items budgets and various parking operations line budgets.
  • Work with both Finance and BMC operational leadership to interpret accounting rules and their implications on operations. Build and maintain relationships with all system wide departments with a focus on customer service. Be able to communicate accounting rules and reporting to non-finance/accounting savvy leaders to help them be effective in their jobs and make informed decisions.
  • Ensure timely reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts and utilize a risk-based approach to ensure the prioritization of high-risk accounts such as cash and Accounts Receivable. Ensure reconciliations are prepared by staff and that resolution of outstanding items and variances is done timely. Ensure related party accounts on balance sheets between Health System related entities are settled routinely; advise Controller and System CFO on potential funding deficiencies between entities and the need for net asset transfers.
  • Monitor the control of cash receipts and analysis of other receivables.
  • Monitor the proper accounting for the Hospital\xe2\x80\x99s fixed assets.
  • Ensure proper accounting treatment in compliance with current Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Keep Current on all new Accounting Pronouncements. Responsible for researching accounting guidelines and interpreting rules for accounting questions that arise. Enhance professional knowledge by attending trainings and seminars related to healthcare and accounting.
  • Inform Controller regarding areas of exposure within the Accounting office, as well as other areas within Finance.
  • Work closely with FIS on any changes or upgrades to the General Ledger and related sub-systems.
  • Develop and implement internal accounting policies, procedures and controls under the direction and approval of the Controller and with input from BMC\xe2\x80\x99s auditors
  • Establish appropriate accounting systems and all related controls discussed above to track the extended affiliations with Boston University, Boston Healthnet and other corporations as necessary.
  • Recruit, train and mentor a qualified and highly motivated accounting team, with a focus on encouraging team members to become or hiring CPAs. Provide ongoing training and education, including cross-training to build expertise, career ladders and help ensure staff job satisfaction.
  • Oversee special projects and other duties as assigned

EDUCATION:

BA/BS in Accounting or related-degree required. CPA required. An MBA or Master\xe2\x80\x99s degree in finance or accounting is preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

CPA required

EXPERIENCE:

10 or more years of experience, including 4 \xe2\x80\x93 6 years supervisory experience, in an accounting environment, including a non-profit organization, preferably in healthcare

  • Must be a dedicated team player and have a desire for personal and professional growth.
  • Work requires superior experience on General Ledger System(s) (Infor preferred, but not necessary) as well as excellent Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint skills ; possess the ability to train others in these skills.
  • Work requires ability to function in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.
  • Work requires ability to handle multiple priorities with superior organizational skills.
  • Must be willing to work additional hours as necessary to meet deadlines
  • Requires strong analytical skills and a solid working knowledge of US GAAP.
