Job Description


The Associate Dean (AD) is primarily responsible for shaping the success, growth, and future in the area of English as a Second Language (ESL) and college readiness. This includes campus-based, employer, prison program instruction as well as Concurrent Enrollment. The AD will work with internal stakeholders and faculty, peer institutions, employers, K-12 partners, community groups, and prospective students in the critical areas of program and curriculum development; recruitment of adjunct instructors and corporate trainers; retention and completion; and innovative program delivery to provide effective educational offerings to students that lead to on-ramps and student support in technical education, degree programs, and employment. AD must proactively facilitate professional teamwork among faculty members within SLTech and across the Salt Lake Community College community in order to successfully accomplish the desired vision and mission.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

Leadership * Provide leadership, support and supervision for department faculty and staff.

  • Establish and lead the department in appropriate goals that have a clear tie to SLCC & SLTech mission and strategic goals.
  • Lead employer and community engagement designed to better serve marginalized and under-presented groups.
  • Create and maintain a culture of innovation, quality standards, student-centered and accountability.
Personnel * Ensure that College personnel policy and procedure is appropriately applied to personnel matters within the department or division.
  • Utilize College policy and procedure to resolve faculty and staff grievances, concerns, and problems. Address performance concerns in a direct, professional, and timely manner.
  • Ensure on-boarding and training of adjunct faculty, full-time faculty, and staff communicates expectations associated with Salt Lake Technical College faculty and staff work.
  • Coordinate and evaluate the professional activities of all members of the department, to include providing guidance to faculty regarding professional growth, evaluation, and tenure. Participate in the tenure process as described in policy. Assist the Director of HR Faculty Services, Faculty Development Office, and Dean in coordinating and facilitating necessary faculty records, as appropriate.
  • Consult with faculty members and the Dean regarding faculty recruitment, appointments, promotion, sabbatical leave, faculty retention, and other personnel matters, adhering to all appropriate policies and procedures.
  • Hire, orient and train, supervise and (if needed) discipline adjunct instructors, assisting them in developing pedagogic skills and collegiality within the department. Engage full-time faculty and department staff, as appropriate.
  • In collaboration with the Dean and Provost, verify and manage the assignment of the full-time faculty teaching assignments in compliance with established procedures and directives.
  • Provide for the management and supervision of assigned support staff and facilitate support for faculty teaching and service activities.
  • Appoint appropriate task forces and work groups within the department.
  • Schedule and coordinate work-study students, lab coordinators, readers, graders, and aides where applicable.
  • Oversee faculty tracking and reporting of student progress, engagement, and employment outcomes as required for all SLTech programs.
Budget * Monitor department inventory, supplies, and capital equipment.
  • Prepare and maintain a department budget.
  • Coordinate the informed budget process among department members and initiate budget requests with justifications.
  • Maintain fiscal control of department budgets, ensuring that department funds are used in accordance with all College policy and state statute.
Students: * Serve as liaison for the department, especially for students. This requires that the AD\'s office be covered, such that students and staff will find the AD\'s office attended and open for business during regular business hours.
  • Coordinate with Student Affairs and department members to provide appropriate advisement and consultation for students in department programs.
  • Coordinate with Student Affairs and faculty members to recruit students to department programs.
  • Participate in admission processes for ESL and college readiness programs, and help adjudicate student grievances as described in the Code of Student Conduct, and serve as a liaison for students and adjunct faculty members.
  • Promote successful student transfer to technical education and degree programs and/or employment placement and/or cooperative education placement.
  • Coordinate with Student Affairs or departments in the administration of financial aid and scholarships.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties Continued
Minimum Qualifications
  • Masters degree in Linguistics, TESL, Higher Education of Business Administration, Leadership, or related field required.
  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible work experience in higher education administration, ESL administration, developing and assessing co-curricular learning outcomes, or technical education that includes supervision of a team.
  • Evidence of significant and productive participation in department-level processes such as scheduling, program review, department test preparation and administration, curriculum development, student issues, new program or initiative implementation, and other department tasks.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters degree in Linguistics or TESL
  • Teaching experience in higher education or corporate setting
  • Program evaluation experience

  • Sensitivity to, respect for, and understanding of the needs of economically and educationally disadvantaged populations in a higher education setting. Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, including differences in ability, culture, and ethnic background. Ability to maintain good working relationships across the College. Ability to work with all groups from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds from community college students, faculty and staff, community members, employers, and K-12 partners.
  • Knowledge/experience in curriculum and program development as well as assessment in ESL, adult basic skills, college readiness and/or workforce and technical education.
  • Demonstrated success in supervising and leading a team.
  • Demonstrated success in community or employer engagement.
Non-Essential Responsibilities and Duties

Teaching is NOT a requirement for this Associate Dean position. This is an exception to current practice/Cabinet direction.

Teaching:
Associate Dean may request a teaching assignment depending on their specific qualifications and the needs of the department. ADs are permitted to teach one class per term. Deans are responsible to ensure that AD teaching schedules do not detract from their primary administrative duties in accordance with: * SLCC Policies and Procedures 3.03 (Conflict of Interest, External Employment and Consultation) III.B.1: All personnel of the College holding full-time salaried positions shall give full services to the work of the College during scheduled work periods.
  • SLCC Policies and Procedures 3.03 (Conflict of Interest) IV.A.3: Other College Employment. No employee should be paid twice for performing the same service.
Therefore, all AD teaching requests require prior consultation with and approval from the appropriate Dean. Deans are required to sign AD overload teaching contracts. Additionally, Deans must document their approval in a signed memo to the Provost for Academic Affairs with cc to the AD. If an AD overload assignment occurs during normal AD duty hours (per section \'Appointment of ADs,\' Part G) the memo must also specify a plan for the AD to make up any full-time work effort, which will be supplanted by the overload teaching assignment. Compensation for teaching will be at the overload rate.
