Job Description


Summary

The requisition expires on January 27, 2024, but may close earlier if the position is filled prior to the expiration date.

Responsible for assisting with the creation, organization, and instruction of the recreation program for the youth afterschool program, including arts and crafts, homework time, physical activities, and special interest activities for afterschool and other holiday/school closure days. Assist with various programs and special events on evenings and weekends.

Essential Functions and Other Important Duties

Essential Functions:

  • Plan, organize, and implement various recreational related activities for school age children (K-5th).
  • Lead, supervise, and conduct classes, activities, and special events.
  • Supervise children and respond immediately, in case of emergency, including administering first aid as necessary.
  • Follow appropriate training and ensure an atmosphere where students are actively engaged in meaningful learning and recreational experiences.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly environment for children including but not limited to, equipment and materials; ensure appropriate items are accessible, appropriate and in good condition for child use.
  • Assist in the enforcement of department, site, and program rules and/or regulations, and safety precautions.
  • Administer medication and maintain medical records and logs.
  • Assist with the maintenance of all child records, including but not limited to, attendance, discipline, and injury; communicate appropriate information with parents/guardians, as directed.
  • Maintains regular and punctual on-site attendance.
Additional Duties:
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications / Acceptable Equivalency:
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
Core Competencies:
  • Knowledge of CPR/AED first aid procedures.
  • Knowledge of childhood development that supports recreational activities that are organized, age appropriate and maintain interest.
  • Knowledge of applicable Federal and State laws regarding education, as well as City of Denton policies and procedures.
  • Skill in interpersonal relationships, including using tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Skill in leading and instructing activities, such as arts and crafts, sports, games, and creative dramatics.
  • Skill leading and teaching day camp or after-school activities, sports, nature, and/or arts and crafts.
  • Skill in performing basic mathematical calculations with accuracy.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks, work under pressure, and meet multiple deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, as appropriate for the needs of the audience.
  • Ability to form and maintain effective relationships with coworkers and customers.
  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.
  • Ability to lead and motivate others and takes appropriate action in discipline situations.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain reports.
  • Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure.
  • Ability to assist in developing, coordinating, and directing varied activities involved in an afterschool program.
Preferences:
  • One (1) year of college (prefer coursework emphasizing education, childhood development, or recreation studies).
  • Previous work experience in a camp or afterschool program setting.
Conditions of Employment:
  • Must have and maintain a valid Class \xe2\x80\x9cC\xe2\x80\x9d Driver\'s License and valid state required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class \xe2\x80\x9cC\xe2\x80\x9d driver\'s license and state required minimum automobile liability insurance within 90 days of hire per state law).
  • Must pass a drug test, driver\'s license check, social security verification and criminal history background check.
  • Must pass a physical examination.
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Must be able to obtain American Red Cross or American Heart Association Adult and Pediatric CPR/ AED and First Aid certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Must attend and successfully complete the City\'s Van Training course as soon as possible.
  • Must be able to work designated afterschool schedule for the needs of the facility .
  • Must be available to work approximately 16-20 hours per week, consistently Monday thru Friday from 2:45 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. for the Afterschool Program.
  • Must be able to work during holiday and spring break camps, teacher in-service days, and other Recreational Care special events and programs, as needed during the daytime, evenings and weekends.
  • Must be available for position trainings during the designated timeframe outlined for program.

Additional Information:
Machines, Tools, Equipment and Work Aids:
The essential functions of this position require the use of driving a 15-passenger van.
Requires lifting and use of chairs, tables, coolers and inflatables and other equipment as needed.

Environmental Factors:
The essential functions of this position are performed in the outdoors under extreme heat and cold conditions.
