The Department of Teaching and Learning within the College of Education at the University of Iowa is seeking an Adjunct Instructor for the following 4-semester hour course to be taught in the Fall 2026 semester for the Regents Alternative Pathway to Iowa Licensure (RAPIL) Program:

EDTL:3059 - Introduction to Education and RAPIL

+ This online course is designed to provide foundational knowledge and understanding of educational practices for teacher intern candidates in the Regents Alternative Pathway to Iowa Licensure (RAPIL) program.

Course Learning Outcomes



During active participation in this course, students will have the opportunity to establish a context for the Iowa Teaching Standards (ITS) as they:



Identify major historical moments in the development of the US educational system and relate the characteristics of these movements to modern issues in US education (including Covid, the Core Standards, National and State policies, ESSA, Teacher Quality).



Analyze the teaching profession and teaching practice and Goodness of Fit through the lens of varying contextual factors with an emphasis on creating positive learning environments for all students.



Identify key characteristics of today's students related to diversity, learning styles, behaviors, etc. and how those impact building community in the classroom/school, instruction, planning, assessment.



Recognize the classroom community is an integral part of the global classroom and develop student capacity for navigating the global classroom.



Analyze a variety of instructional strategies as part of teacher decision-making for instructional planning, assessment, and classroom management.



Explore concepts of contemporary trends in education and examine their impact on teaching and learning in today's classrooms.



Construct varied and appropriate learning goals that align with district, state and/or national standards and that demonstrate an understanding of learning theories and development through lesson planning.



Analyze, plan, and implement effective instruction informed by the formal, informal, and hidden curricula that meets learning goals through the application of appropriate instructional theories of learning, development, instruction, and assessment.



Observe and reflect on practices in teacher collaboration that support student learning.



Develop a repeatable reflective strategy to improve instruction in student learning.

3. ATLAS (Accomplished Teaching, Learning and Schools videos) Observation Reflections (4).



4. Humanizing Topics in Education presentation based on research and use of Google slides.



5. Contextual Factors Analysis of community where you hope to teach.



6. Job Fair Pitch for Education Job Fair.



7. Educational Cover Letter.



8. Educational Resume.



9. Summative Lesson Plan, Observation and Reflection based on live observation.



Ideal Faculty Candidate will have:



Secondary classroom teaching and/or administrative experience (3 or more years preferred).



Experience working with or supporting teachers new to the profession.



An understanding of the Iowa Teaching Standards and InTASC standards for educator preparation.



Successful experience with creating course scope and sequence based on best practice research.



Demonstrated success as a positive collaborator and establishing equitable working partnerships.



Good organizational skills and ability to maintain a rigorous pace with instruction and grading.



University-level teaching experience in education-related courses in some or all of the focus areas above.



Experience teaching with technology and/or online courses.



Position Expectations:



Co-teach with Dr. Chad Cardani-Trollinger; anticipate approximately 60 RAPIL students.



Collaborate in planning course content, model best practice for instruction, provide timely feedback on coursework (split with co-instructors and assistant instructor), meet with Faculty Lead to reflect on feedback.



Course length - 8 weeks, Fall Semester (August-October).



Class Meetings:



Seven Wednesday Evenings via Zoom, 6:00-8:30 p.m.



Two full (9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.) Saturdays, in person, location determined by Program Coordinator.



Attend RAPIL Orientation in August (Virtual Introduction, 5-10 minutes)



Attend RAPIL Faculty Workshops (Fall, Spring, and Summer)



Provide course overview for RAPIL evaluators to connect field work with course content.



Participate in RAPIL applicant interviews (May).
