Position Overview

The Basketball Referee ensures safe, fair, and enjoyable play by enforcing game rules and maintaining control of youth basketball games. Referees play a key role in promoting sportsmanship, teamwork, and a positive experience for all players, coaches, and spectators.

Schedule

Most games take place on weeknights between 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm and Saturdays between 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Evening and weekend availability required Schedules may vary based on league needs and gym availability

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Officiate youth basketball games, applying rules consistently and respectfully Manage game flow and maintain player safety and fairness Communicate effectively with players, coaches, scorekeepers, and spectators Arrive on time, in uniform, and prepared for each assigned game Handle disputes calmly and professionally; escalate concerns when necessary Complete required game documentation (score sheets, incident reports, etc.) Assist with gym setup and cleanup before and after games Encourage good sportsmanship and positive behavior at all times Attend all mandatory training sessions and staff meetings Follow all City of Alton Parks and Recreation policies and procedures Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Must be at least 16 years old (14 or 15 with a valid work permit) Prior experience officiating or participating in organized basketball preferred Working knowledge of youth basketball rules and game management Ability to stay composed and make quick, fair decisions under pressure

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Ability to run, jog, and stand for long periods on hardwood courts Work indoors in warm or cool gym environments Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs Must have clear visual and auditory ability to respond to game play and emergencies Frequent communication with players, coaches, and staff
