The Kentucky Statewide Independent Living Council (SILC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing independent living and advocating for the rights of individuals with disabilities across the state. We work in collaboration with Centers for Independent Living (CILs), disability organizations, and state agencies to create polices, programs, and initiatives that support the independence and full participation of Kentuckians with disabilities in their communities.
Position Title: Youth Coordinator
Reports To: Executive Director
Pay: range based on experience $47,000-$55,000
Classification: Full-time, remote with travel
The position is responsible for developing and coordinating a youth advisory council to ensure that youth with disabilities in Kentucky have opportunities to build leadership skills, learn about advocacy, and understand their rights. The individual in this position will serve as a role model and mentor for youth with disabilities as well as an advocate for disability rights and justice.
Essential Functions (with or without reasonable accommodations)
Mentor youth with disabilities on a statewide level.
Create/further develop a statewide Youth Advisory Council that consists of youth ages 14-24.
Plan, schedule and host monthly YAC peer support calls
This position will be the lead communicator with all YAC participants
Develop the YAC structure, including but not limited to, documents, YAC application, satisfaction surveys, resources, volunteer hours, and more
Represent the SILC and the youth disability community on relevant youth-related boards, committees, and councils.
Attend outreach events to represent the SILC and YAC, make new connections, and recruit youth members
Be the lead contact and planner for the Youth Advocacy Summit
Qualifications
At least two (2) years full-time experience working with people with disabilities.
Specific qualifications include:
Knowledge of disability rights and the Independent Living Philosophy.
Strong organizational and customer service skills.
Previous experience working with youth or in youth advocacy.
Experience in the delivery of presentations and leading groups.
Leadership and interpersonal skills with diverse peers, consumer base, and other staff members and management.
Able to function independently and adapt readily to multiple assignments and deadlines.
Computer proficiency.
The ability to interact personally with people, businesses, and service organizations on all levels.
Preferred Qualifications:
Personal experience with a disability.
