The City of Reidsville is seeking an experienced and licensed Certified Water Treatment Plant Operator to join its Utilities team at a municipal water treatment facility that operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round. The City of Reidsville Water Treatment Plant is a professionally operated municipal facility dedicated to delivering safe, reliable, and high-quality drinking water to the community. In 2024, the plant earned a significant achievement for the first time in its history -- the North Carolina Area Wide Optimization Program (AWOP) Award, presented by the NC Division of Water Resources.

Only 63 water treatment plants statewide received this designation, recognizing facilities that consistently surpassed federal and state drinking water standards through exceptional operational performance, optimization, and commitment to excellence.

Position Summary



Under the direction of the Water Treatment Plant Superintendent, the Certified Water Treatment Plant Operator performs advanced operational, monitoring, and laboratory duties to ensure the production of safe, high-quality drinking water in compliance with all EPA and NCDEQ regulations. This position requires a licensed operator capable of working independently, making process control decisions, and supporting a culture of excellence and compliance.

Operators work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call rotations, as required for a continuous-operation facility.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities



Operate, monitor, and optimize water treatment processes to meet or exceed regulatory standards Monitor SCADA systems and make process control adjustments as needed Collect samples and perform laboratory analyses in accordance with regulatory requirements Maintain accurate operational, laboratory, and compliance records Perform routine inspections, adjustments, and troubleshooting of plant equipment and systems Respond to alarms, emergencies, and water quality events Assist with preventive maintenance activities and minor equipment repairs Support optimization efforts and continuous improvement initiatives Assist with startup, testing, and operation of new equipment or treatment modifications Ensure compliance with all safety procedures and regulatory requirements Provide guidance or mentoring to less experienced operators, as assigned Participate in on-call and emergency response rotations

Minimum Qualifications



High school diploma or GED Current North Carolina Water Treatment Plant Operator Certification (Grade appropriate to assignment; Grade B or A preferred) Minimum of two (2) years of experience operating a municipal water treatment facility Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-outs Valid North Carolina driver's license

Preferred Qualifications

Grade A North Carolina Water Treatment Plant Operator Certification Experience working in a high-performing or optimized water treatment facility Strong laboratory and water quality analysis experience Familiarity with SCADA systems and automated process controls Experience supporting regulatory inspections and compliance reporting

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Thorough understanding of water treatment processes and drinking water regulations Ability to interpret laboratory results, operational data, and treatment trends Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy Independent decision-making and problem-solving skills Ability to work effectively as part of a team committed to excellence Commitment to public health protection and environmental stewardship
