Position Summary
The Structural Fit & Welding Lead is responsible for overseeing the complete structural fabrication process--from layout and fit-up through final welding--ensuring all work meets drawing requirements, tolerances, codes, and quality standards. This role sets the standard for safety, workmanship, and production efficiency while leading, mentoring, and coordinating teams to deliver high-quality assemblies with minimal rework.
Core Responsibilities
Fit-Up & Layout
Lead and verify accurate layout and fit-up of structural frames, platforms, mezzanines, and assemblies per drawings and tolerances.
Ensure fit-up accuracy and quality before releasing work to welding.
Pre-inspect materials and prepare workstations daily to support efficient production.
Stage materials and manage daily priorities to keep workflow moving.
Identify and escalate design or drawing issues early to prevent downstream errors.
Welding Oversight
Oversee all structural welding activities in compliance with applicable codes, WPS, and PQR requirements.
Ensure correct use of welding procedures, filler metals, preheat, and inter-pass temperature controls.
Maintain weld integrity, cleanliness, and visual/aesthetic acceptance.
Monitor welder performance and assist with qualification of new welders as needed.
Ensure equipment readiness and proper use at all times.
Quality, Safety & Compliance
Maintain code compliance, traceability, and documentation on all structural welds.
Set and enforce a strong culture of safety, quality, and pride in workmanship.
Minimize rework by ensuring work is done right the first time.
Work closely with QC to ensure seamless inspections and approvals.
Leadership & Coordination
Own the structural fabrication process end-to-end with accountability and professionalism.
Coordinate closely with fitters, welders, materials, and QC to ensure smooth transitions between phases.
Actively communicate production status, constraints, and needs to supervision.
Mentor junior fitters and welders, building bench strength and team capability.
Set clear expectations for pace, quality, and discipline across the team.
