ABOUT THIS POSITION

The City of Phoenix Law Department consists of three divisions: The City Attorney's Office, the City Prosecutor's Office, and Management Services. The Prosecutor's Office is seeking a Victim Advocate I to join the Victim Services Unit.


The Prosecutor's Office prosecutes misdemeanor crimes that occur within the city of Phoenix such as criminal trespass, disorderly conduct, shoplifting, dog at large, leaving the scene of an accident, and criminal damage. The Victim Services Unit assists crime victims throughout the criminal justice process by providing advocacy, support, and services that are both critical and/or legally mandated functions related to victims' rights such as sending victim notification letters, ensuring victims have court escorts, and ensuring that emergency services are available and provided to victims.


A Victim Advocate I is responsible for providing direct services to victims of crime and will need to prioritize duties based on court date and hearing status as the criminal justice process is a fast-paced workload and has time sensitive deadlines. This role interacts with prosecutors, defense attorneys, detectives, patrol officers, and/or other governmental agencies. Core responsibilities include explaining victims' rights and the criminal justice procedures, assessing crime victim cases, and providing safety planning.


Additional responsibilities include:

Updating case status information and court dates. Providing information regarding victim's rights and invocation procedures. Referring victims to various agencies with the expertise and capacity to provide necessary services. Educating on the procedures of the criminal justice system. Escorting victims to court. Acting as a liaison between the victim and prosecutor. Assisting with victim related paperwork.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

Knowledge of safety planning, victim's rights, trauma, and secondary trauma. Ability to read, write and speak in the Spanish language desired.

SALARY

Pay Range: $19.54 to $36.84 per hour.


Hiring Range: $19.54 to $30.31 per hour.

Pay range is the entire compensation range for the position classification. Hiring range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.

Internal Only:

Please understand that this is pay grade 345. If selected, your salary offer will be based on the applicable promotion or demotion worksheet in accordance with the City Pay Ordinance.

Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase. Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease. Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade. When there is a change in the first digit of the pay grade, there may also be a change to your classification or unit.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Two years of experience in social service programs. Associate's degree in social work, sociology, social services, or a related field. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum qualifications may be substituted. All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position. This position is subject to the

Criminal Justice Information System background (CJIS)

standards. Candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment must be fingerprinted and will have their fingerprints used to check the Criminal History Records of the State of Arizona Department of Public Safety and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Any records returned will be reviewed to determine the candidate's suitability for the job.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

Knowledge of the criminal justice system and/or experience with legal proceedings. Basic computer proficiency using Microsoft Word. Fluency in the Spanish language is preferred (read, write, speak).
