Summary: Performs a wide variety of unskilled and semi-skilled labor activities in the routine maintenance of the city water distribution system and/or wastewater collection system. Operates light equipment.

Supervision Received: Director of Public Works, Operations Manager, Maintenance Superintendent, Utilities Foreman

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Essential Job Functions:

  • Checks and thaws all fire hydrants, valves and valve boxes; receives training in and performs routine maintenance work on hydrants and valve boxes as directed; keeps records on all work done.
  • Assists in general maintenance and repair of pumps and pumphouses.
  • Assists in excavating for and locating line breaks; assists in repair and replacement of water mains, fire hydrants, valves and valve boxes as required.
  • Performs a wide variety of routine maintenance on wastewater collection lines, lift stations and the wastewater treatment system; flushes wastewater collection lines; cleans catch basins and lift station grates.
  • Performs a wide variety of building and grounds maintenance; mows, rakes and irrigates grounds surrounding pumping and/or lift stations; paints and maintains pumphouses and /or lift stations.
  • Assists in wastewater collection line jetting operation; assists in repair of lift station pumps, manholes and collection lines.
  • Operates a variety of light equipment including, but not limited to, loaders, sewer jetter, steamers, and trucks in the operation and maintenance of a sewage collection system, water distribution system and related system grounds.
  • Performs work after hours on an as needed basis.
  • Must be on call occasionally on weekends or after hours.
  • Assists in reading meters
  • Assist in repairing meters and remote reading devices.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • The nature of this position requires the ability to respond to emergencies in a timely fashion.
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications: Ability to learn and understand the hazards and the safety precautions common to excavations. Ability to learn, understand, and apply applicable work methods and materials. Ability to perform moderately heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time in all types of weather. Ability to operate motor driven and hydraulic equipment. Ability to follow simple verbal and written instructions. Ability to exercise independent judgment as appropriate. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and administrative superior.

Education: High school graduate or equivalent.

Experience: Any combination of education and experience.

Equipment Used in Job Performance: Loaders, sewer jet, trucks, backhoes, skid steer, sewer vac unit, power tools and hand tools.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, talk and hear; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl sit; and climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outdoor weather conditions. The employee regularly works in wet, humid conditions and near moving mechanical parts. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places, is exposed to risk of electrical shock, is exposed to fumes or airborne particles and is subject to vibration. The noise level in the work environment is loud to very loud.

Necessary Special Requirement: Valid North Dakota commercial driver\'s license; insurable under the City\'s motor vehicle insurance policy. Position is safety sensitive and requires pre-employment drug and alcohol testing and is subject to controlled substance requirements at all times when on duty.
