Black Hills State University is seeking applicants for a Professional Advisor in
TRIO
Student Support Services. This 12-month, full-time position is part of the
TRIO
Student Support Services Program, which is funded with federal grant funds through 8/31/2032. Future employment past this date will be dependent upon continued grant funding.
DUTIES
Manage caseload of 70-90 Student Support Services (
SSS
) participants
Complete and monitor academic schedules and graduation plans
Document student contacts
Advise and refer students for issues affecting their academic performance
Assist with developing students financial competency including
FAFSA
submission, budgeting, financial literacy
Accurately communicate University policies and procedures
Coordinating events like
TRIO
Day, First-Generation Day, End of Year Celebration and other events happening in
TRIO
Assist students in exploring career options related to their academic programs of study
Develop projects and tasks that enhance
TRIO
student experiences
Participate and assist with
BHSU
Summer New Student Orientation Days and Preview Days

The successful candidate will be one of four full-time staff and a number of part-time staff who are dedicated to providing academic, financial, social, and personal support services to first-generation students, income eligible students, and students with disabilities.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree required
One to three years of experience working with first-generation, income eligible students, and students with disabilities
Ability to work with and relate to a wide range of individuals, especially college students
Flexible, adaptive, and positive working style
Effective team participant and collaborator
Effective verbal communication and interpersonal skills
Effective written communication skills
PERFERED
QUALIFICIATIONS
Master's degree in Student Affairs, Counseling, Educational Administration, Leadership, Education, Sociology, Psychology, Human Services or related field
Advising or
TRIO
related experience
Knowledge of activities designed to enhance student academic success and retention
Knowledge of and ability to address mental health
Strong understanding of University environment and operation
