Salary Grade: NC14 / Recruitment Range: $49,158 - $86,026

NCDOT Internal Posting - Only current permanent full-time, permanent part-time, probationary, trainee, or time-limited NCDOT employees or layoff candidates with the NC Department of Transportation eligible for RIF priority reemployment consideration as described by General Status (GS) 126 (State Personnel Act) may apply.

This position is located in the Guilford County Maintenance Unit (Sandy Ridge). Work is related to maintenance and repair of State-maintained roads within in Guilford County. Supervise crew of subordinates in the maintenance and construction of highways and other assigned duties. The position will supervise a roadway maintenance crew working in and around heavy traffic, near heavy equipment and with power tools. Applicant must be able to maintain a close team environment or work independently, as needed. Responsibilities include the supervision of a roadway maintenance crew that is involved in pavement patching, drainage maintenance, shoulder repair, paved and unpaved roadway maintenance, vegetation management, snow and ice removal and emergency response to roadway maintenance needs. Must be able to install and maintain work zone control plans. Complete daily work reports and conduct daily tailgate meetings. Position is required to work nights and weekends, as needed, for emergency and planned operations in all types of weather conditions and on uneven surfaces and slopes.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Experience in road maintenance and repair, as well as, maintenance equipment operation
  • Experience in record keeping, such as tracking employee and equipment time and recording quantities of materials used
  • Experience in NCDOT snow and ice operations
  • Experience in Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices
  • Experience planning work and supervising a work crew
Additional Expectations:

Work includes reading and interpreting plans, determining personnel, equipment and material needs to complete assigned maintenance tasks. Employee is responsible for making appropriate adjustments to plans to meet field conditions, planning, monitoring, and ensuring safety standards are adhered to, daily documentation of personnel, material, and equipment usage, responding to public inquiries, attending training and continuing education classes to keep up to date on all state and federal regulations and maintain certifications in all required areas (ie: traffic control and environmental stewardship). Work may include lifting up to 50lbs repeatedly. Employee must have ability to climb, bend, traverse steep and uneven terrain, and work in extreme temperature conditions. May require work during nontraditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Position is subject to emergency call back. Safety toe footwear is required.

The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver\'s license with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver\'s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver\'s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.

Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, release forms (ALCDRG-01 and ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience. Experience must be related to functional area of the work that the position will supervise.
