Research Department Teaching Assistants (TAs) work with the primary instructor in online courses to sustain an elevated level of classroom interaction through frequent and timely responsiveness to students\' discussion items, assignments, emails, frequent questions, and other approaches used in the course to increase active participation. As subject matter experts, they assist in grading and other academic matters.

Essential Functions

As determined in conjunction with the course instructor, the TA may take any of the following roles in the assigned course.

  • Grade course discussions, assignments, and assessments as a first grader with the aid of grading rubrics and provide grade recommendations to the faculty member.
  • Provide timely responses to postings in discussion groups as needed.
  • Be familiar with course content, organization, and assignments and explain these to students as needed.
  • Answer student emails within 24 hours (48 hours on weekends).
  • Refer students to appropriate resources as needed.
  • Promote active learning and student engagement in addition to answering students\' questions.
  • Model effective online interaction for students.
  • Spot, address, and inform the faculty member of retention issues such as a) students who continue to struggle academically in the course, b) students who have stopped participating, c) chronically late submission of course work, and d) administrative or financial problems routinely encountered by students.
  • Review student activity daily during the week and at least one day on the weekend
  • Prepare in a timely way for the following week\'s activities and content.
Education and Experience Qualifications Required:
  • Master\'s degree or higher in relevant field
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills (both written and oral)
Preferred:
  • Teaching experience in higher education
  • Successful completion of MUIH\'s RSCH 601 or its equivalent
  • Experience working with adult learners through online learning formats
  • Commitment to the philosophies of Maryland University of Integrative Health Skills and Abilities
  • Work closely with primary faculty to provide course instruction, student feedback, and student evaluation
  • Regular and frequent communication with primary faculty and adult learners
  • Ability to effectively provide instruction and timely feedback through the learning management system Canvas
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office
  • Model healing presence in all interactions with students
