JOB SUMMARY
Assists teachers, principals, directors, and other school - based staff and Central Office personnel in the planning, delivery, and evaluation of special education services for students with disabilities who may also exhibit challenging behavior. Examples of disabilities include, but are not limited to: autism or high functioning autism, intellectual disabilities, multiple disabilities, significant physical impairment or other health impaired.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists school teams in developing and implementing special education services to meet the needs of students with disabilities and/or challenging behaviors in the least restrictive environment.
  • Assists in implementing services and providing appropriate instructional strategies, equipment and curricular materials to meet the needs of students with significant developmental delay, autism, complex health issues or multiple disabilities in the least restrictive environment.
  • Assists school staff in the interpretation and implementation of policies/procedures governing student accessibility to school buildings and instructional/learning environments.
  • Assists in planning and providing staff development and in-service training to teachers. Provides assistance to classroom teachers in implementing ideas and techniques gained through in-service.
  • Assists in informing and acquainting teachers with new ideas, instructional programs, strategies and trends in the field of special education as they relate to the inclusion of students with the above mentioned disabilities.
  • Develops and implements staff development for assistants for this student population.
  • Assists teachers in providing diagnostic prescriptive educational assessments for students with or suspected of having autism, intellectual disabilities, significant developmental delay, complex health issues or multiple disabilities incidence disability.
  • Assists IEP committees to determine appropriate goals and objectives for students based upon assessment data.
  • Works cooperatively with the Division of Transportation, Pupil Services, the Anne Arundel County Health Department, and other related service personnel to ensure appropriate services are provided to students with significant developmental delay, autism, intellectual disabilities, complex health issues or multiple disabilities incidence disabilities.
  • Coordinates the successful transition of students with disabilities as they articulate through the school system.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

Education
  • Master\'s Degree in applicable field of education from a regionally accredited college or university required.
Experience
  • Three (3) years teaching experience related to the provision of services with students with disabilities and/or challenging behaviors required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities as a member of the school staff.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and human relation skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in written form with professional colleagues, staff, students and parents.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with business technology applications (e.g. Video/Web Conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite -Word, Excel, Outlook, and/or PowerPoint preferred).
Licenses and Certifications
Employee must retain active licenses, certifications, and enrollment as a condition of employment.
  • Hold or be eligible for Educator Certification: Advanced Professional Certificate (APC) issued by Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) required.
