Overview

The Tax Accounting Clerk is responsible for the transactional day-to-day tax and licensing activities, providing administrative support to the Tax Department, and front-line support to other departments needing assistance with tax-related items. Although responsible for support in a variety of areas, majority of this position\xe2\x80\x99s time is spent on preparing sales tax, federal excise tax payments, and other filing requirements, ensuring compliance requirements and deadlines are met.

This position entails gaining knowledge in the various aspects of the organization, including, but not limited to, preparing/posting general journal entries, preparing monthly property tax accrual, preparing local, state, and federal filing requirements, and assistance with audit preparation.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and organize tax files, records, and statements.
  • Assess and review tax data and information required for monthly, quarterly, and annual local, state, and federal reporting requirements; complete forms for review, and log into respective portals and submit needed information electronically and/or via mail. Includes but not limited to: Sales tax reporting, FET reporting, business licenses, etc.
  • Track monthly due dates on licensing and permits with governmental agencies. Complete or send reminders to appropriate staff member to ensure completion before compliance due date.
  • Complete check request forms to receive checks to pay licenses, permits, and real and personal property taxes. Create Journal Entries for posting.
  • Compile checks, invoices, and appropriate backup for signature and then mail items out.
  • Reconcile real and personal property tax spreadsheets to their respective general ledger accounts.
  • Research, analyze, and make recommendations for correction of balance tax accounts.
  • Process Journal Entries to the General Ledger and Account Reconciliations for month end closing.
  • Assist in special projects and tasks as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications
  • Associates degree with emphasis in Accounting (Preferred) or equivalent accounting certificate. An equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable.
  • 2-3 years of experience performing various accounting related duties or related office experience.
Experience within medium to large sized companies that operate in a best practice environment preferred * Knowledge of file organization systems and processes
  • Basic accounting knowledge related to journal entries, account reconciliations, and general ledger
  • Intermediate skill with all required computer systems/programs, including but not limited to Windows & Microsoft software applications, CDK, etc.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent detail orientation with a high degree of accuracy
  • Sound analytical skills
  • Honest and trustworthy, exhibiting sound business ethics
  • Ability to complete work with a minimum of supervision under rigid time constraints
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks
  • Ability to handle sensitive information and maintain high level of confidentiality

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to effectively communicate with others. Frequently required to remain in stationary position. Frequently required to operate and use computer and other office equipment. Frequently required to utilize vision to perform tasks such as reviewing spreadsheets, reporting, etc. Occasionally required to move about inside and outside office. May occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
