The Rhode Island School for Progressive Education (RISPE) seeks Summer Mentor Teachers to join our Alternative Route Teacher Certification Program in Elementary Education for Summer 2023. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Acting as a mentor coach for RISPE teacher candidates
  • Running a summer school classroom with candidate(s): overseeing curriculum, modeling lessons for candidates, gradually releasing responsibility to candidates
  • Debriefing with candidates, including written and verbal feedback
  • 6 weeks July-August 2023 (includes one prep week)
  • In-person observation of candidates
  • Debriefing and written feedback
Please indicate in your cover letter when you apply your area of specialization. This program will run in the summer, beginning in July 2023. Summer mentors can expect to spend 5 hours per day working with candidates, 4 days per week, for 6 weeks in total. All our programming has been designed to recruit aspiring teachers of color with a deep commitment to working in RI\xe2\x80\x99s urban districts. Applicants should be professionals and/or scholars in their chosen fields, with a minimum of a Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree and a valid Rhode Island teacher certification with active professional records of leadership and achievement. People of color, LGBTQIA people, and disabled people are especially encouraged to apply. The Rhode Island School for Progressive Education (RISPE) is Rhode Island\xe2\x80\x99s newest educator preparation provider and the first institution of higher education in the state to be founded with the express mission of diversifying Rhode Island\xe2\x80\x99s teacher workforce and promoting anti-racist education. RISPE was developed over four years with generous support from the Rhode Island Foundation and the United Way of Rhode Island and received unanimous approval from the Rhode Island Council on Postsecondary Education in March 2019. The ultimate goal that guides all of RISPE\xe2\x80\x99s work is to improve outcomes for all students in Rhode Island\xe2\x80\x99s urban public schools by diversifying the teacher pipeline, promoting the use of anti-racist pedagogy, and preparing teachers for success with high-quality clinical experiences. We use proven best practices and the real-time feedback of the educators and district partners we work with to provide responsive, relevant, and supportive programming in our pursuit of highly-effective, equitable education for all students.
