Position Summary:

Student Support Services (SSS) is looking for a Comprehensive Advisor committed to social justice and educational opportunity principles! SSS is a federally-funded TRiO program that serves 280 limited income, first-generation, and disabled college students. The program\'s mission is to assist this diverse population of students toward the goal of graduating with a bachelor\'s degree. Starting pay for this position is $23.25.

Duties:


1-55Comprehensive Advising and Advocacy for At-Risk Baccalaureate Students: Work is performed under administrative supervision. Using a case management approach, provide comprehensive advising and counseling for 70 to 90 baccalaureate students who are first-generation, low-income, experience documented disabilities, or are otherwise at-risk by following Student Support Services\' processes, including the department\'s advising code of ethics. Understand the program\'s objectives and related data. Assist in collecting, analyzing, and assessing data to measure success. Interview and document new program participants, evaluate their eligibility for services, including qualification under program criteria and likelihood for academic success and approve or deny acceptance into the program in accordance with program policy. Synthesize student\'s personal circumstances and individual needs to promote academic success. Assign program services, such as tutoring or laptop loan, to meet academic needs. Work with students on identifying resources to meet social needs, such as child care referral, housing, legal assistance, and vocational rehabilitation. Assist advisees with deciding on a major or changing majors, course scheduling, identifying sources for and obtaining financial aid, planning for graduation, employment, social supports, and relevant referrals. Use test scores, academic record, and judgment when determining course placement and semester load. Explain university policies and regulations, apply degree audits and creation of graduation plans to ensure a timely graduation. Monitor program participants\' academic progress, maintain contact and keep written and electronic records of the counseling and advising sessions. Coordinate regular personal interaction and enforce student accountability through written contracts. Identify, contact, and establish a plan of action for struggling or failing students in consultation with the Associate Director or Director as needed. Advocate for students on academic issues, to include but not limited to authorizations for appeals for Financial Aid, academic probation, and academic disqualification, Residence Life, and the Bursar\'s Office. Refer students to appropriate legal and social resources for complex problems. Identify the need for improved or additional services and research and help develop retention strategies as needed. Provide input on the development of policies and procedures for the program. Assist in selecting recipients of student scholarships. Conduct workshops or training for students and/or staff. Assess programs offered and create special programs as needed to fulfill a documented need. Responsible for event concept, compliance, and assessment. May approve exceptions to the normal course of business. May lead** or supervise** lower level employees. Evaluate processes and procedures and make recommendations. 30Administer Emerging Scholars Academy Summer Bridge Program: Network with Admissions, First Year Advising, Rural Student Services and other similar programs to recruit eligible participants from the incoming fall first year student population. Represent SSS at open houses, registration, and advising events. Coordinate program logistics for summer bridge component and set up cohorted courses for the fall and spring. Manage all logistics including coordinating activities, arranging guest speakers, catering, housing, scheduling classrooms, tours, field trips to offsite locations, transportation, purchasing supplies and program swag, facilitate communication and outreach to students as well as campus and community stakeholders to cultivate a unique experience for program participants. Work closely with SSS Program Specialists to ensure all prospective students apply for ESA and program paperwork is completed. Select, correspond, and meet with participants using discretion and judgment that will help SSS best meet program objectives. Lead Emerging Scholars Academy summer bridge programming with assistance of all available SSS staff. Assess and evaluate program services and modify future offerings based on findings. Track student progress through advisor check ins, monthly meetings with ESA faculty, focus groups, and surveys. The duties and responsibilities of this position may include teaching workshops as well as a 1-credit College Success Skills course, specifically for SSS students in the Emerging Scholars Academy cohorted learning community. In addition, some evening and weekend hours may be delegated to the Lead SSS Advisor on a case by case basis.Essential
4-15Outreach and Engagement: Contribute and participate in program communication and public relations on and off campus. Give presentations about the SSS program to university constituents, various university groups such as students in a specific course, academic or student service departments, new student orientation, or the faculty senate. Represent the program by participating in open houses or university fairs and provide SSS information and literature. Help organize and participate in TRIO day, an event recognizing TRIO students and heroes and the impact of these programs. Attend and facilitate student social activities designed to help connect students. Actively participate on university committees or teams as assigned by the Director or Vice Provost, especially those impacting academic advising, retention, or student success. Attend campus meetings relevant to retention and to program activities, work with faculty and departments on student retention, coordinate and share information with other departments involved with tutoring and academic support. Develop collaborations among departments with similar missions and functions. Assist in the development and distribution of flyers and brochures and social media updates.Essential




Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Knowledge: Knowledge of university systems and environment, social inequality, social justice and student development theory. Knowledge of best practices, appropriate boundaries, federal and state laws, and legal issues associated with and applicable to student services and higher education, including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Knowledge of decision-making strategies and problem-solving techniques.

Skills: Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, including public speaking. Excellent active listening, intercultural competency, and conflict resolution skills to establish rapport and provide appropriate positive and negative feedback with students. Strong computer-based skills associated with Microsoft Office including Excel and Access, Internet browser, and social networking programs.

Abilities: Ability to follow assessment instrument results in order to determine placement and develop meaningful and relevant educational plans. Ability to work as an influential part of a team. Ability to comprehend and apply TRIO and university policies and procedures as they relate to students and to refer students to relevant offices for assistance while adhering to advisor role. Ability to troubleshoot situations to determine the best course of actions. Ability to juggle multiple priorities and tasks in a fast-paced student-centered environment.


Preferred Experience & Education:

Two years relevant experience in a post-secondary educational setting.


Required Experience & Education:
Bachelor\'s degree in a relevant field.

Bachelor\'s degree must be from post-secondary institutions that have regional accreditation recognized by the US Department of Education and/or the Council of Higher Education Accreditation.



Salary Information:
This is a full-time, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, Grade 79, based on education and experience.
