Hours: 12-15 hours/week POSITION SUMMARY Student Chaplains are responsible to serve as a pastoral presence for the single residence halls on the Kentucky campus. The Student Chaplain is in a unique position to assist individual students and groups of students in their spiritual growth and development as they "do life" together. Respect, trust, and rapport with residents must be built over time to aid the process of open communication necessary for life to life ministry. The Student Chaplain must be sincerely interested in the wellbeing of individual students as well as the welfare of the larger seminary community. The Student Chaplain is responsible to pursue personal holiness and holistic wellness and to support the purposes, objectives, and standards of the Seminary in his/her own life. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT Qualifications
Must have lived in a Seminary single housing hall for one semester or more
Full-time student with no more than 12 academic hours per term
Maintain a minimum 2.75 GPA
Personal and spiritual maturity demonstrated in a Christ-like spirit, ethical integrity, and emotional stability
Evidence of leadership and shepherding gifts
Demonstrate healthy personal boundaries
Show respect for fellow students and display strong interpersonal skills including ability to listen and resolve conflict
Must have a teachable attitude
Must be able to maintain confidentiality
Period of Employment
Student Chaplains are employed August - May. Student Chaplains may reapply each year. No spots are guaranteed from year-to-year.
Student Chaplains return to campus before classes begin (generally two weeks early, date is set by May 31) and remain until checkout dates.
Each Student Chaplain will be evaluated at the end of each year.
Time Commitment
Student Chaplains are required to spend 12-15 dedicated hours a week in focused chaplain work. This time will be used to interact with students in the residence hall and other responsibilities, including weekly office hours, weekly staff meetings, events, and one-on-one meetings with students.
Student Chaplains are expected to be flexible in meeting unexpected needs as they arise.
Student Chaplains are expected to attend regular mentorship appointments with the Community Formation department.
Compensation Student Chaplains will submit an hourly report each week and fill out a time card online every two weeks. The hourly reports must be turned in before a time card can be approved by the Director of Community Formation. RESPONSIBILITIES Support the Department of Community Formation with pastoral care
To build relationship with dorm residents and to offer community (pastoral) care.
To be available to all new students in their adjustment into seminary and residential life.
To serve as a support for students regarding academic, personal, social, and spiritual problems.
Work with students to develop banded discipleship groups (DNA groups).
Ensure the chapels in the residence halls are set up for practical use.
Assist in the development of students spiritual formation along with the leadership of the Community Formation Department.
Be flexible to deal with problems as they arise other than just evening hours.
Support the Residence Life team in the following endeavors
To collaborate with the Residential Assistant (RA) staff to model the standards of Asbury Seminary.
To foster an atmosphere for healthy and harmonious community life.
Support and attend Residence Life-sponsored programs and socials.
To support the decisions of the Seminary administration.
Support the RA staff if an emergency arises.
