The Staff Scientist position provides support to the Bennartz Laboratory within the Earth & Environmental Sciences Department. In this role the Scientist will supervise and perform research and contribute to the technical oversight of the laboratory. The individual will plan and conduct research for their own and plan the team\'s work to meet experimental and publication deadlines. Administratively, the Scientist will work directly or in conjunction with the Principal Investigator (PI) to help ensure success in all aspects of remote sensing research in the laboratory. The individual will work closely with graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and research assistants in a dynamic laboratory environment. The ability to function independently, as well as part of a team, is critical.

The Bennartz Research Laboratory develops novel retrieval algorithms for atmospheric parameters in the context of various current and future NASA earth observation missions including the Polarized Sub-millimeter Ice-cloud Radiometer (PolSIR) and the Time-Resolved Observations of Precipitation structure and storm Intensity with a Constellation of Smallsats (TROPICS) mission. This position focuses on algorithm development and validation in the context of these missions.

The work unit is made up of faculty, research staff, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students.

Duties and Responsibilities

Research

  • Independently oversee research projects and perform research
  • Supervise, plan, design and implement research projects
  • Establish highly complex protocol(s); define data collection, evaluation, and analysis procedures
  • Implement and initiate scientific data evaluation and analyses for research project(s) requiring independent interpretation of complex research data
Atmospheric Remote Sensing
  • Exercise discretion and independent judgment to develop and execute retrieval algorithms in the context of NASA\'s TROPICS and PolSIR missions
  • Supervise set-up and operation of various scientific experiments involving complex data evaluation procedures
  • Must be knowledgeable in atmospheric remote sensing
Instrument Management
  • Exercise discretion and independent judgment to develop methods and procedures for operation of scientific equipment for atmospheric sciences
  • Supervise set-up and operation of various scientific experiments involving apparatus and equipment
Computation
  • Planning and implementation of algorithms to derive atmospheric parameters from passive microwave and sub-millimeter remote sensing instruments
  • Develop computational tools to produce reports of results, graphs, charts, tables, etc. of research findings
Teaching
  • Mentor and teach graduate students and post-doctoral fellows in developing their projects and on specific techniques and protocols
  • Train and supervise undergraduates, technical staff, and graduate students
  • Provide technical guidance to students, post-doctoral fellows and faculty as required
Professional Communications
  • Contribute to research to merit serving as a primary author on research publications
  • Assist PI in writing research grants and contract proposals
  • Assist PI in manuscript preparation for scientific journals
  • Present research findings as needed
Institutional Communications
  • Open contact as needed with PI, collaborating professionals, asset management personnel, Environmental Health and Safety, Institutional Review Board staff, administrative staff relating to budget capabilities
  • Contact as required with sponsoring agencies and/or cooperating facilities, collaborating professionals and vendors
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in physics, electrical engineering, or atmospheric sciences necessary.
  • Knowledge and experience in atmospheric remote sensing and satellite data analysis is required
  • Knowledge of python, matlab or IDL required
  • Knowledge of microwave radiometry is preferred
  • Excellent organizational and communications skills (both verbal and written) are required
  • Attention to detail is required
