Function/Duties of Position

This position is part of the leadership of the Smedley laboratory which conducts macaque models of infectious disease, requiring knowledge of macaques, infectious diseases, minimally invasive surgery, imaging, regulations, and IACUC protocols/guidelines. A doctorate degree or doctorate of veterinary medicine degree and the ability to understand a wide variety of research protocols in sufficient detail to provide oversight/training of staff and experimental conduct is required. This position will conduct surgeries/procedures and write detailed descriptions/records in support of the project to the principal investigator.

  • The incumbent will have a diverse range of responsibilities, which includes, but not limited to the following:
  • support Dr. Jeremy Smedley with developing and refining surgical techniques for the improvement of the non-human primate (NHP) model in infectious disease research;
  • developing and executing infectious disease study plans;
  • coordinating and support of NHP research protocols; formulating budgets for NHP studies;
  • providing authorship and presentations on progress and findings of studies;
  • and preparing and maintaining Institutional Animal Care and Use and Institutional Biosafety protocols for NHP studies.
  • Additionally, the staff scientist will prepare forms and update animal records as applicable;
  • supervise technical staff;
  • provide training for technical staff;
  • and provide technical expertise for surgical procedures, research substance administration, sample collection, and necropsies as appropriate for the individuals\xe2\x80\x99 training.
Required Qualifications

Education:
  • Doctoral degree in relevant field and 5+ years of relevant post-doctoral work experience.
Experience:

Minimum of 3 years conducting or supporting NHP infectious disease protocols involving Risk groups 2 and 2/3 agents. Possesses a significant or high command of a professional sphere of

knowledge. Performs research and shares leadership responsibilities

consistent with goals of the research program. Contributes to science at a

considerable level as determined by the discipline. Possesses a high or exceptional command of a professional sphere of knowledge. Performs research and has leadership responsibilities consistent with goals of the research program. Contributes to science at a significant level as determined by the discipline. Participates in mentoring trainees and/or research personnel.

Experience:
  • ability to operate and communicate effectively while meeting multiple deadlines and completing projects simultaneously;
  • ability to interact in a positive, productive manner with administrative, veterinary, scientific and technical staff (demonstrating sensitivity, tact, and professionalism);
  • proven ability to link projects and identify project interdependencies;
  • ability to develop and implement new and revised SOPs, maintain current SOPs;
  • ability to provide training oversight and documentation of training for applicable procedures, and lead effective meetings that are tailored to the participants; ability to effectively identify and resolve issues and concerns within the research projects;
  • ensure compliance with contract terms, all applicable federal, state and local regulations, policies, and procedures;
  • demonstrated veterinary skills for handling, restraining, examination of, and conduction of clinical and minor surgical procedures on NHP assigned to infectious disease protocols in a containment environment;
  • excellent eye-hand coordination;
  • advanced proficiency with Excel, Word, and readily adaptable to learning and use of new data base systems;
  • Willingness to work with pathogens potentially dangerous to humans;
  • Willingness to work in Biosafety Level 2 and 3 facilities;
  • Willingness and ability to work flexible hours;
  • Ability and willingness to work independently;
  • Ability to carry and lift 35 lbs.;
  • Ability to stand for three continuous hours a day;
  • Ability to work on computer for five continuous hours a day;
  • Able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without; accommodation
Preferred Qualifications

Education:
  • Doctorate degree related to infectious disease or Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/MD) from an AVMA-accredited college/university.
  • Technical/surgical proficiency with nonhuman primates.
Experience:

Minimum of 1 year of experience supervising NHP technicians

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):
  • Ability to conduct and train on laparoscopic and other minimally and noninvasive procedures in NHPs
