What You Will Do





Come join our team! The Staff Operations Manager (SOM) 3 will report to the Environmental Protection and Compliance Division (EPC) Division Leader and serve as a key member of the Division Leadership Team, enabling business and operations excellence in support of the EPC mission. EPC works with projects across the Laboratory to ensure all operations comply with State and Federal environmental requirements. We deliver solutions that provide operational flexibility while minimizing environmental impacts, costs, and complexity associated with compliance.



We are seeking a highly motivated, self-starter with the vision and drive to implement innovative solutions for staff development, retention, and customer service challenges across the EPC portfolio.



The SOM maintains strong professional relationships at all levels of the Laboratory and has the authority to represent division management as a liaison in responding to requests and institutional assignments.



Typical responsibilities include:

Providing guidance to managers and employees on operational, policy, and administrative issues, serving as a point of contact for issue resolution. Mentoring administrative staff to ensure consistency of operations across the Division while promoting professional development. Leading and coordinating Division responses to local and institutional action items, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and quality. Participating in the development and execution of strategic and staffing plans, initiatives, presentations, and reports. Supporting the hiring process by assisting with documentation, interviewing, and onboarding.


What You Need





Minimum Job Requirements:





Operational Expertise:



Comprehensive knowledge and demonstrated expertise in managing administrative, business, and operational activities, including safety, security, quality assurance, and strategic planning.



Laboratory Knowledge:





In-depth understanding of the Laboratory's organizational structure, policies, and objectives.



Collaboration and Leadership:





Proven ability to build effective partnerships, lead teams, and foster cross-organizational collaboration.



Analytical and Project Management Skills:





Strong experience in conducting research, driving process improvements, executing plans and implementing solutions to high-level organizational challenges.



Communication:





Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including influencing, consensus building, and conflict resolution.



Personnel Management:





Demonstrated success in supervising and developing administrative and professional staff.



Education/Experience:

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.



Desired Qualifications:





LANL Structure and Mission:






Comprehensive knowledge of Laboratory organizational structure, policies, requirements, and various business systems; expert-level understanding of LANL's business, operations, and program missions.



LANL Business Systems:






Proficiency in multiple LANL systems, including Oracle, Concur, iProcurement, performance management systems, and Microsoft Office Suite.



Work Location:

The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.



Position Commitment:

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Directive 206.2

No Clearance:

Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.



New-Employment Drug Test:

The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.



Regular position:

Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.



Internal Applicants:

Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader.
