The Sr Federal Affairs Director invests in the future of Southwest\xe2\x80\x99s People by protecting and advancing Southwest\'s interests before Congress and the various federal agencies and offices that regulate or impact commercial aviation. This role collaborates with Teams across the enterprise including but not limited to Legal, Real Estate, Finance, Marketing, Customer Experience, Network Planning Community Outreach, and Investor Relations. The Sr Federal Affairs Director is a skilled communicator who can effectively synthesize and disseminate information and serve as the primary point of contact for political relationship management in their designated region where they\xe2\x80\x99ll have the opportunity to drive their own career with Heart and the future of Southwest Airlines.

Additional details:

This role is offered as a regional workplace position and Employees must work in the region they support. This could require working from a mix of on-site Company facilities and remote based offices to perform the job function in a regional location determined by business need. Each Department will provide Employees with guidance on when and where presence is required with as much notice as reasonably possible.

Please note, while this is a regional position, there is limited group of states or localities ineligible for Employees to regularly perform their work off-site. Those ineligible locations are: Alaska, Delaware, New Jersey, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

U.S. citizenship or current authorization to work in the U.S. is required, and no current or future work authorization sponsorship available.

Job Summary

Principle duties include advocating Southwest\'s interests before governmental bodies at the federal level of government, especially within the legislative branch, and providing substantive and project-specific support to the Government Affairs Department and to the Company as a whole. This individual is involved in strategy development and project execution in a specified number of states and/or cities. Lead strategy implementation is the primary point of contact for political relationship management in their defined region.

Responsibilities

Build ongoing and strategic relationships with key policy makers, governmental officials, and their staff and provide briefings on SWA topics of interest

Determine prioritization and engagement strategy of new legislation and/or regulations

Develop strategic plans leveraging external resources (e.g., A4A, consultants, industry colleagues, advocacy, and chamber organizations)

Develop strategic plans leveraging internal resources (e.g., corporate expenditures, SWAFF dollars, and people resources)

Direct and oversee plans across the Team, leveraging and coordinating internal and external resources through A4A, consultant management, and other outside resources

Draft reports, briefings, letters, and testimony

Serve as liaison to Southwest Airlines CEO\'s office for trips to D.C. or elected official visits to HDQ, including scheduling, creation of read-ahead materials, and in-person briefing support

Identify, monitor, analyze, and brief Internal Stakeholders on new policy issues with Company impact as they arise

Represent the Company externally at hearings, high level policy meetings, industry functions, policy/advocacy associations, and community events

Synthesize internal SME information for departmental memos and/or communication and education of policy makers

May perform other job duties as directed by Employee\'s Leaders

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods including alternative ways to inform and entertain via written, oral, and visual media

Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar

Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules, and the democratic political process

Skilled in identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions

Skilled in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems

Ability to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions (includes finding a relationship among seemingly unrelated events)

Education

Required: High School Diploma or GED

Experience

Innovator level experience, highest level of knowledge in:

Working on Capitol Hill, in a state legislature, or for a transportation-related agency in a policymaking position, and/or as a government relations professional for another company, firm, or trade association

Licensing/Certification

Physical Abilities

Ability to perform work duties from limited space workstation/desk/office area for extended periods of time

Ability to communicate and interact with others in the English language to meet the demands of the job

Ability to use a computer and other office productivity tools with sufficient speed and accuracy to meet the demands of the job

Other Qualifications

Must maintain a well-groomed appearance per Company appearance standards as described in established guidelines

Must be a U.S. citizen or have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986

Must be at least 18 years of age

Must be able to comply with Company attendance standards as described in established guidelines

Pay & Benefits:

Competitive market salary from $130,750 per year to $145,300 per year* depending on qualifications and experience. For eligible Leadership and individual contributor roles, additional bonus opportunities are available and awarded at the discretion of the company.
