Job Description


The Senior Director, PR is responsible for developing strategic media relations and communications programs to advance TIAA\xe2\x80\x99s business priorities, protect and enhance TIAA\xe2\x80\x99s reputation, and drive awareness of TIAA with external audiences. The scope of these includes public relations, media relations, external executive presence, reputation management and will focus on an array of enterprise-wide initiatives, company thought leadership and special projects. The Senior Director will also serve as a point person for management and results reporting, a resource for others in the Media Relations team to help with key projects and executive visibility programs, and guide PR support for the TIAA Institute. This person is ultimately responsible for executing robust external communications programs to reach current and potential TIAA participants and other targeted individuals to best position the company\'s suite of products, services and overall expertise in the retirement industry. In addition, the Senior Director will work closely with Communications partners in B2B, B2C, Nuveen and Corporate to drive integrated programs and messages to stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

  • Identify, create and execute external communication programs in support of strategic priorities with a key emphasis on retirement, lifetime income, financial health and security and TIAA\xe2\x80\x99s robust suite of products and service offerings.
  • Work with the Media Relations team and others to fully leverage TIAA thought leadership and other key company assets through end-to-end public relations programs.
  • Help create, build and execute earned media programs in support of TIAA Institute as well as relevant marketing campaigns and thought leadership.
  • Track competitors relentlessly and distinguish TIAA from its competition by creating programs that innovatively highlight the company\xe2\x80\x99s specific expertise and strengths, while also driving broad brand awareness for the firm.
  • Help build and extend external executive visibility platforms for the TIAA executive leadership team by identifying themes and storylines and building PR programs to execute in the market.
  • The Senior Director provide external communications counsel to senior management and other internal subject-matter experts, as well as provide issues management support as needed.
  • Create content, messaging and pro-active programs that support key initiatives and themes such as lifetime income, the role of annuities in retirement planning, investing habits and needs of Millennials/Gen Z, closing the racial and gender wealth/retirement gaps, and the value of financial planning and advice in all its forms.
  • Work closely with the larger Marketing and Communications teams and key stakeholders to ensure alignment around key priorities, positioning and initiatives.
  • Create the full spectrum of communications materials in support of TIAA\xe2\x80\x99s business and positioning, including messaging documents, press releases, and executive platform development.
  • Cultivate, maintain and leverage press relationships with key targets, including retirement trade press, personal finance outlets, mainstream press, business press and local press outlets, as needed, to reach target markets.
  • Promote client and relevant business success stories.

Preferred Skills

  • Financial services experience, having served in either public relations and/or employee communications or other communications roles.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the financial services sector, market and competitive landscapes.
  • Direct experience managing communication professionals.
  • Experience and comfort functioning as a senior communications counselor for senior leaders on both proactive topics as well as issues management.
  • Experience working with and influencing senior leaders and business partners by providing guidance and direction on communications activities.
  • Critical thinker and self-starter who is willing to work proactively to identify key business priorities, opportunities and threats, and work across teams to implement the necessary solution.
  • Organized, high-energy individual capable of working in a fast-paced and fluid environment; understanding of when to operate with urgency and/or escalate matters.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
Base Pay Range: $142,000/yr. - $236,600/yr.

Actual base salary may vary based upon, but not limited to, relevant experience, time in role, base salary of internal peers, prior performance, business sector, and geographic location. In addition to base salary, the competitive compensation package may include, depending on the role, participation in an incentive program linked to performance (for example, annual discretionary incentive programs, non-annual sales incentive plans, or other non-annual incentive plans).
