US Foods Legal Team is approximately 60 strong, including attorneys, paralegals, food safety and regulatory professionals and others. The legal team\xe2\x80\x99s mission is to advance business objectives through innovative legal partnerships. The Sr Counsel role will serve as Employment Counsel providing advice and guidance to Region management in the field on a wide variety of employment issues which arise from the day-to-day operations of a growing, complex public company.

This position is virtual/remote which means the work can be completed from anywhere is the United States except Hawaii or United States Territories. \xe2\x80\x8b

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide guidance to the Company and regional management teams, on the full gamut of employment and human resources matters, including all policies and procedures, wage and hour compliance, leave of absence and accommodations, risk assessment related to terminations, and OSHA investigations.
  • Provide California-specific employment law guidance on topics such as wage and hour compliance, paid sick leave, and interactive process.
  • Draft, review, analyze and negotiate all employment-related agreements including consulting, hiring, terminations, compensation and severance plans, incentive, non-compete and confidentiality agreements.
  • Provide regional senior management, region Human Resources leaders, and business units with advice, counseling and advocacy regarding discrimination and harassment claims and procedures and to a lesser degree, labor matters including unfair labor practices.
  • Advise management on employment compliance and risk management in order to accomplish business objectives without undue risk.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of and familiarity with the Company\'s business, its people, markets, facilities, customers and competitors in order to identify trends and formulate appropriate structures and strategies.
  • Establish a rapport and working relationship with teammates at all levels in order to encourage and continue the proactive use of in-house legal counsel.
  • Perform special assignments or projects as assigned by the Associate General Counsel and Assistant General Counsel, Region Employment.
RELATIONSHIPS:
  • Internal: Human Resources, Senior Management, and Business Unit Leaders.
  • External: External counsel and federal, state, and local regulatory authorities.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Remote role. Any and all onsite work will be performed in a typical office environment.
  • Ability and willingness to travel overnight as needed. Could be up to 15-20% travel.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • The successful candidate will have a minimum of 3-6 years of experience focused on employment law.
  • Must have significant experience advising on California employment laws.
  • An ability to learn the business and broader industry, to diagnose legal problems in the employment context, and present positive, creative solutions and alternatives for management. Experience making practical risk assessments in a way that balances legal obligations and business needs.
  • The ability to be a strong fit with Company\xe2\x80\x99s culture; to communicate and operate candidly and with transparency to effectively engage and influence diverse teams in a highly collaborative, decentralized environment.
  • A proactive, energetic and enthusiastic approach to all tasks, great or small, and the confidence and developed sense of humor to work with talented and demanding business teams.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
  • The ability to translate complex legal issues into clear business terms and otherwise \xe2\x80\x9cdemystify\xe2\x80\x9d complex legal concepts for clients at all levels of the organization.
  • The experience and confidence to push for change and, when appropriate, to challenge the status quo in a way that will be heard and respected.
  • Maturity, stature and strong interpersonal skills; a recognized leader whose counsel and judgment are actively sought.
  • Unquestioned integrity and ethics in business and personal conduct.
  • Self-motivated, tactical, innovative, strategic, detail-oriented and able to provide high quality and timely work product with an understanding of the issues and business-focused strategies.

EDUCATION:
  • An undergraduate degree and law degree with academic achievement from nationally recognized institutions.
LICENSES:
  • Admission to and in good standing with a U.S. state bar association.
The following information is provided in accordance with certain state and local laws. Compensation depends on experience, geographic locations, and other factors permitted by law. In Colorado, the expected compensation for this role is between $114,100.00 and $181,000.00. In New York City, the expected compensation for this role is between $135,700.00 to $181,000.00. In California and Washington, the expected compensation for this role is between $128,900.00 and $181,000.00. This role is also eligible for an annual incentive plan bonus.
