Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

We have an opening for a Hazardous Waste Team Lead. You will execute multiple waste management projects, including decontamination/decommissioning (D&D) of radiological and/or chemically contaminated equipment or facilities, laboratory clean-outs, management of potentially contaminated soils or building materials, and the decommissioning of tanks or systems used to process radioactive or hazardous materials. This position is in the Radioactive and Hazardous Waste Management (RHWM) Program in the Weapons and Complex Integration (WCI) directorate. You will
  • Lead and execute small to medium scale laboratory clean-outs, decontamination and decommissioning (D&D) jobs, tank closures, chemical disposal efforts, and other non-routine waste management jobs.
  • Contribute to project plan development, identify problems, provide original solutions and assist in estimating the labor and resources necessary to execute projects.
  • Collaborate with a variety of LLNL customers, including researchers, facility and programmatic managers, and environmental professionals to manage non-routine waste projects.
  • Independently operate in a matrix environment with limited direct authority to complete projects. Interact with craft personnel, researchers, regulators, Environment, Safety and Health professionals, waste management personnel, and LLNL managers in a constructive and collaborative fashion to accomplish work. Develop relationships with LLNL service and regulatory organizations to effectively deliver on commitments.
  • Set daily priorities and oversee the work of multiple small teams in the sampling, packaging and management of radioactive and/or hazardous waste.
  • Develop work control documents and/or procedures for non-routine waste management jobs. Ensure personal and team safety and the compliant performance of work.
  • Perform all assignments in accordance with ES&H, security, and business practice requirements and policies.
  • Promote and support plans to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor\'s degree in chemistry, materials science, environmental technology, or the equivalent combination of education and extensive related experience.
  • In-depth knowledge and advanced understanding of waste management regulations, including waste identification and characterization, waste packaging and transportation, and operation of waste accumulation areas.
  • Extensive experience performing hands-on work in a high-compliance environment (e.g., hazardous waste site, power plant, nuclear/radiological facilities).
  • Experience leading small teams, including recruiting, hiring, and personnel management.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform and oversee high-hazard projects in a chemical, radiological, nuclear, or industrial setting (e.g., decontamination and dismantlement, lab clean-outs, hazardous waste site remediation, power plant outages).
  • Ability to develop and obtain approval for work control documentation such as procedures, work permits, waste disposal documentation, etc.
  • Advanced organization skills, attention to detail, accuracy and follow-through to manage multiple simultaneous projects to completion.
  • Advanced written, verbal, feedback and presentation communication skills in specific technical areas.
  • Ability to wear respiratory protection and encapsulating PPE. Ability to climb ladders, work in confined spaces and lift/carry loads of up to 80 lbs.
  • Demonstrated ability/commitment to valuing diversity, equity, and inclusion principles in the workplace.
Qualifications We Desire
  • Experience working at a Department of Energy site.
  • Experience working in nuclear/radiological facilities.
  • Experience in the Nuclear Navy.
  • Working knowledge of LLNL policies and procedures.
