Description/Job Summary Under supervision of the Coordinator of Special Programs, the Special Programs Advisor advises students for the Office of Special Programs not limited to the Mayor\'s Scholars Program, Granville T. Woods Scholars Program, Near-Completers, and other program grants. The advisor supports students as they learn about academic expectations and requirements, successful learning strategies, management of personal resources, and navigating college systems. In addition, the special programs advisor develops and implements activities, programs, and events. Engages students and supports their abilities to clarify career and/or transfer goals. The advisor provides academic advising, career literacy, academic progress reports, holistic development, and supports student engagement. The Special Programs Advisor works with the Office of Student Success and attends regularly scheduled advisor meetings and trainings. Responsibilities/Duties

  • Provides academic, career, transfer advising and registration services to special; population and other populations;
  • Builds rapport with students, setting and reinforcing student expectations;
  • Recruit students into BCCC;
  • Provides academic coaching to students who run into obstacles on their path to program completion; Assists students with understanding ACCUPLACER results/Multiple Measures;
  • Assists students with course credit transfer reviews and the review of educational plans; Works collaboratively across the college to support students in the career pathways;
  • Assists students with understanding degree completion requirements, course registration, and schedules;
  • Promotes student engagement and college completion behaviors by connecting students to appropriate resources and activities;
  • Develops educational plans with students and monitors advising milestone progress, academic status, and progress towards graduation to include satisfactory academic progress (SAP) appeals;
  • Documents advising meetings in collaboration with established Student Success Center processes; Completes exit interviews for students who are withdrawing from the college;
  • Participates in college wide projects;
  • Supports the implementation of programs and retention services focused on integrating career literacy outcomes and college completion planning for the entire student body; Engages in outreach to promote special programs and career literacy;
  • Serves on institution wide committees and engages in professional development activities focused program objectives; Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor\'s degree in relevant field such as education, counseling, or academic field directly related to this role.
  • Minimum of one year experience as an academic advisor or related academic functions within higher education.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master\'s degree in a relevant field (counseling, psychology, higher education administration, etc.); demonstrated experience as an academic advisor and an understanding of developmental and prescriptive advising practices; and strong presentation skills. Experience responding to a variety of internal and external constituencies; experience interpreting policies and making decisions independently; experience using Banner ERP, Colleague, or similar software.
  • Bilingual (English - Spanish) communication skills.
  • Community college experience
