Departmental Overview

The Berkeley Seismological Laboratory (BSL) operates and maintains a network of traditional geophysical instruments across Northern California. The data collected is archived for research purposes as well as analyzed in real-time to provide earthquake information and to produce earthquake early warnings, known as ShakeAlerts.

The BSL created the MyShake app to put earthquake products, including earthquake early warnings, into the hands of smart phone users. Additionally, a novel approach to producing earthquake early warnings is to use cell phones and other mobile devices to detect earthquakes, which the BSL has successfully proven possible with MyShake. This position exists for the development and support of back-end software (server-side) for applications, such as MyShake, as well as for other BSL products.
