Description

Perform scheduled preventive maintenance and repairs to small engine landscaping and maintenance equipment. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Parks Superintendent and performance is reviewed while in progress, through conferences reviewed for quality of service rendered to clients.

Examples of Duties

Salary Range $21.50 - $33.33

  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on small engine equipment, including handheld landscaping and maintenance equipment, all-terrain utility vehicles, ride-on, and walk-behind mowers, air compressors, portable generators, pressure washers, water pumps, and chemical sprayers.
  • Perform scheduled maintenance on small diesel engines, including water pumps, woodchippers, tractors, and all-terrain utility vehicles.
  • Complete necessary repairs to small engine equipment, including engine repair and replacements, carburetors, tune-ups, hydraulic and drive systems, transmissions, and all other worn or damaged components.
  • Remove, replace and sharpen lawn equipment blades.
  • Diagnose and repair faulty electrical system components including starting and charging systems, electronic engine controls, lighting, accessories and wiring harnesses, etc.
  • Utilize a computerized work order system to create and enter work orders, research equipment history and account for labor times.
  • Drive to and from various locations and perform service calls to equipment in the field.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned. Be available for emergency callouts.
  • Communicate effectively with parts personnel to acquire both inventoried and special-order parts.
Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent and three (3) years of experience in small engine maintenance and repair to include: Stihl, Briggs & Stratton, Kohler, Kawasaki, and Honda experience.
Valid Florida Driver\'s License with acceptable driving history (must remain current throughout employment)

Skills, Work Environment and Hours

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Experience with small engines, diesel engines, mowers, and small hand-held equipment such as chainsaws, edges, weed eaters, generators, etc.
  • Knowledge of the operational, safety, and maintenance requirements of a park or recreational area.
  • Knowledge of the basic laws, rules, and regulations relating to the use of facilities as applicable to City operations.
  • Skill in prioritizing work assignments.
  • Skill in resolving problems or situations requiring the exercise of good judgment.
  • Skill in interpreting policies.
  • Discuss equipment issues, maintenance plans, and work performed with customers
  • Perform routine engine maintenance, such as lubricating parts and replacing spark plugs
  • Test and inspect engines for malfunctioning parts
  • Adjust components according to specifications
  • Repair or replace worn, defective, or broken parts
  • Reassemble and reinstall components and engines following repairs
  • Keep records of inspections, test results, work performed, and parts used
Physical Demands
Depending on function area of assignment, tasks involve the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work and may require occasional lifting, carrying (up to 50 pounds), pushing and/or pulling of objects or materials (up to 30 pounds) frequently, and/or in excess of 10 pounds of force constantly. Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation and extended periods of time standing and/or walking.

Work Environment
The worker is subject to outside environmental conditions: no effective protection from the weather. The worker is subject to extreme heat: temperatures above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour. The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions: one or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system or the skin: fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases or poor ventilation. The employee works in a dynamic environment that requires me to be sensitive to change and responsive to changing goals, priorities, and needs.

Work Hours
Monday-Friday 7:30am - 4:30pm

Note: During emergency conditions, all City employees are automatically considered emergency service workers.
