Position Overview SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (SLAC) seeks an Associate Scientist for an appointment with the Stanford Institute for Materials and Energy Sciences (SIMES). The Associate Scientist will be responsible for developing materials and conducting research for understanding the fundamental physical properties of quantum materials. The scientist will collaborate with scientists within SIMES, as well as other groups at SLAC and Stanford University. Given the nature of this position, SLAC will require onsite work. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Develop, test, and implement new 2D and other materials synthesis platform technology for coupled ARPES and complementary experiments.
  • Use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) for characterization of the electronic structure of quantum materials, with a strong emphasis on 2D and topological materials.
  • Develop, maintain related experimental tools and laboratory infrastructure.
  • Train and collaborate with young PhD students and postdoctoral researchers.
Note: The Associate Scientist position is the entry level in the Staff Scientist career path. The Associate Scientist is a 3 to 5 year fixed term research staff position. The second level of this career path, Staff Scientist, is a regular continuing position. The Associate position is scheduled to be assessed after the 3 to 5 year period with the possibility of appointment to the Staff Scientist level. Appointment to the Staff Scientist level requires a review and evaluation of documented scientific achievement. To be successful in this position you will bring:
  • Ph.D. in physics, material science, applied physics, or a related discipline and two years of post-doctoral experience in the followings:
    • Developing material synthesis platform, especially in clean and vacuum environment.
    • Preparing samples for ARPES measurements, including single crystal mounting, alignment via X-ray diffraction and other tools, and cleaving.
    • Preparing samples for ARPES measurements, including atomically thin layers preparation and stacking, alignment and characterization via transport, and x-ray tools.
    • Developing experimental apparatuses for ultra-high vacuum environments.
  • Demonstrated competency operating and maintaining glove box system, sample stacking tools, evaporators.
  • Demonstrated competency in thin film surface preparation and cleaning techniques, including in-situ oxidation reduction for oxides surfaces.
  • Knowledge of synchrotron and photoemission spectroscopy.
  • In-depth knowledge of 2D materials and associated scientific topics.
  • Record of excellence in professional achievement, as evidenced by a strong publication record.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out independent research and be able to work in a collaborative environment and supervise students.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in research as evidenced by high level publication.

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
