Assign tasks, schedule work, and supervise the daily activities of the sheet metal crew to maximize efficiency and productivity.
Training and Mentorship:
Train, mentor, and coach crew members, including apprentices, to improve their skills, work quality, and adherence to company standards.
Personnel Management:
Complete daily log reports, track field hours, evaluate worker performance, and address personnel issues or disciplinary actions as necessary.
Project Management and Planning
Interpretation:
Read and accurately interpret blueprints, construction drawings, specifications, and building codes to determine project scope, materials, and methods of fabrication and installation.
Logistics:
Plan the sequence of work, coordinate with other trades and project managers, and manage the flow of materials, tools, and equipment to the job site.
Material Control:
Determine and requisition necessary materials, tools, and consumables for each phase of the project, ensuring proper materials are available when needed.
Scheduling and Budget:
Monitor work progress against the project schedule and budget, providing updated outlooks to management and troubleshooting issues to prevent delays or cost overruns.
Quality and Safety Assurance
Quality Control:
Inspect fabricated and installed work to ensure it conforms to blueprints, specifications, and industry quality standards.
Safety Compliance:
Enforce all company and OSHA safety protocols, conduct regular job site safety analyses, lead safety meetings, and ensure the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (
PPE
).
Issue Resolution:
Identify and resolve technical or operational problems that arise during fabrication or installation.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED equivalent is typically required.
Successful completion of a registered sheet metal apprenticeship program and
Journeyman Sheet Metal Worker
status.
Minimum of
5 years
of progressive experience in the sheet metal trade, with at least
2 years
in a supervisory or foreman role.
Experience in
HVAC ductwork installation and fabrication
and/or
architectural sheet metal
is often preferred.
Skills and Knowledge
Technical Expertise:
Comprehensive knowledge of sheet metal fabrication techniques, materials, tools, equipment, and industry standards.
Blueprint Reading:
Expert ability to read, interpret, and work from construction blueprints and shop drawings.
Safety Certifications:
Current OSHA 10 or
OSHA 30 certification
is frequently required.
Leadership:
Proven ability to lead, motivate, and manage a diverse team of workers.
Communication:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills for reporting, giving clear instructions, and interacting with clients, engineers, and general contractors.
Problem-Solving:
Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to anticipate and resolve construction and scheduling issues.
Physical Stamina:
Physical ability to perform job duties, including standing, climbing ladders, operating machinery, and lifting materials up to 50 lbs.
