Job Description


Geosyntec is seeking a Senior Engineering Technician to join our Acton, Massachusetts team, working on projects across Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine with potential for work on project sites across the United States. The Technician will assist with sample collection of diverse materials including, but not limited to, soil, sediment, water, and air for environmental tests; compile construction quality assurance (CQA) monitoring data related to development, waste containment, and environmental remediation construction projects, provide neat, accurate, and comprehensive documentation of all field-related activities to senior level project personnel; and provide additional field and office support to geologists and engineers for a diverse private and public sector client base. The role requires the ability to comprehend construction plans and specifications and a willingness to perform extensive fieldwork and travel for extensive periods of time, including overnights, weekends, and holidays; and a strong willingness to work outdoors with interest in building a career in the environmental consulting field.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform field and on-site laboratory tests on soil, geosynthetics, and other materials primarily associated with landfill, waste containment system and/or earthwork construction;
  • Perform in-place moisture-density results to verify project compaction requirements are met;
  • Oversee drilling, logging of borings, and instrumentation installation;
  • Monitor activities on job sites to assure compliance with relevant construction and contract documents (e.g. technical specifications, construction drawings, sampling plans, CQA plans etc.);
  • Provide CQA monitoring on several types of construction and/or environmental activities on construction sites;
  • Prepare daily and weekly field reports, construction schedules & progress reports;
  • Assure project documentation is correct and consistent with company policy & procedures;
  • Interact with project personnel (contractors, project managers, engineers & clients) and assist in cultivating an integrated team approach through open lines of communications and participation in work progress meetings;
  • Assist in the preparation of the final reports, work plans, health and safety documents, and the assembly of report appendices;
  • Install and maintain geotechnical monitoring instrumentation including collecting and interpreting data with senior engineers;
  • Observe and abide by the policies and procedures outlined in the site-specific project health and safety plans and the company s Environmental Health and Safety Management policies and procedures; and
  • Perform tasks in other company practice areas including general construction services, environmental sampling, contractor oversight, or construction quality assurance activities, as needed.

  • Training: This position requires OSHA health and safety, radiation safety (for a portable soil moisture/density gauge), first aid, and CPR training and medical monitoring that will be paid for by Geosyntec. EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS, AND EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and a minimum of four (4) years of applicable experience; or an Associate degree or equivalent from a two-year college and a minimum of two (2) years of applicable experience; or a Bachelor s degree in science, construction management, engineering, physical science, environmental science, or related subjects; or equivalent combination of education, experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, Technical experience in construction services, geotechnical, environmental, or related engineering disciplines.   • Certifications from the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) in Materials Testing, US Corps of Engineers construction quality management, or Geosynthetic Certification Institute \xe2\x80\x93 Inspectors Certification Program (GCI-ICP) for Geosynthetic and Compacted Clay Liner Material. (preferred)
  • Experience in construction services, geotechnical, environmental, or related engineering disciplines. (preferred)
  • Experience reading and interpreting construction drawings, including survey and topographical drawings. (preferred)
  • Experience ensuring field activities comply with construction plans and specifications and the ability to monitor several different types of activities simultaneously. (preferred)
  • Experience with the operation of industry typical monitoring and data collection equipment, including but not limited laptop and handheld computers, Troxler moisture /density gauges, scales, Elkins or GEM, and other equipment. (preferred)
  • Experience with multi-media sampling including soil, geosynthetics, water, and air. (preferred)
  • Practical field experience conducting operation and maintenance of mechanical systems including simple troubleshooting of mechanical and electrical systems. (preferred)
  • Exposure to the execution of in-situ and ex-situ remediation projects technologies such as chemical injection technologies, pump and treat systems, and landfill gas recovery systems. (preferred)
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word software programs. (required)
  • Strong mathematical background with the ability to perform calculations in basic geometry and use of algebra. (required)
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, be self-motivated and possess a strong work ethic. (required)
  • Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 49 pounds unaided and 50 to 100 pounds with assistance and/or proper engineering controls.
  • Ability to spend the workday standing and walking across construction sites when needed. (required)
  • Ability to speak and hear, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl. (required)
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing (e.g., emails) with peers, subcontractors, supervisors, and clients to report findings, convey ideas and explain observations. (required)
  • Valid U.S. driver s license, satisfactory driving record, and reliable transportation, for business travel. (required)
