Senior Tax Specialist - Property Tracking Code 221929-021

Purpose of Position

The Senior Tax Specialist - Property will work with various members of the tax group to support both the property tax and state income tax functions to ensure accurate and timely compliance for US subsidiaries of CPKC, a Class I railroad. The US operations of CPKC are spread across 18 northern and central states. The position is located in Kansas City, MO.

• Responsible for property tax compliance in approximately 18 states including preparing property tax returns timely
• Assist in collecting necessary data for property tax report filings
• Review and reconcile property tax payments to ensure payment by due dates
• Prepare monthly property tax accruals
• Assist with property tax account reconciliations as assigned
• Assist with property tax forecasts/budget and variance analysis
• Prepare estimated state income tax payments for timely payment
• Preparation of various other tax returns and reports as needed
• Cross-function support within Tax Department as needed
• Compliance with internal controls in accordance with CPKC policies and Sarbanes Oxley
• Keep current on new and proposed tax law changes
• Other duties as assigned
• Prepare state income and franchise tax apportionment calculations and supporting workpapers
• Prepare state income and franchise tax returns on timely and accurate basis
• Assist with government audits including state income taxes, federal excise taxes, and other audits as assigned
• Assist with tax planning projects as assigned
• Perform tax research as needed

Job Requirements

• Bachelors Degree in Accounting with a minimum of 5 years experience
• CPA or/and Masters Degree in business or taxation (desired)
• Knowledge and experience with Centrally Assessed Property Tax is beneficial
• Knowledge of federal, state and local tax laws
• Knowledge of railroad operations and terminology is beneficial
• Experience and working ability to use tax preparation software
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office
• Strong tax research skills
• SAP knowledge and experience helpful
• Ability to analyze problems and situations and formulate logical and objective conclusions, using good judgment
• Ability to work onsite, full-time out of our Kansas City
• Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communications skills
