POSITION OBJECTIVE

The Cleveland Institute for Computational Biology focuses on the development and application of biomedical and computational approaches to enhance the health of all individuals. Cleveland institute for computational biology research activities encompasses everything from ascertaining new participants into research studies to computational analyses of detailed genetic, genomic, phenotypic, and social determinants of health data. Educational activities include both informal workshops and formal MS and PhD educational programs. Working under limited supervision, the research assistant 3 will work independently and with the study teams, implement activities for research projects, oversee collaborations, supervise students/trainees, and carry out research activities of assigned projects through completion. The research assistant 3 will design and implement research activities for recruitment, specifically to help study coordinators reach potential participants to enroll into any of our multiple studies of late onset diseases such as Alzheimer disease. The research assistant 3 will design, develop, implement, and utilize numerous different approaches and multiple different modes of media (including print, website, and social media) to enhance the success of the institute. The research assistant 3 will also work with multiple collaborators at Case Western Reserve University as well as other universities in the United States and internationally. The research assistant 3 will keep the principal investigator informed of progress of research projects.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS * Provide input and recommendation to principal investigator regarding significant developments in research projects. Provide input and recommendations to principal investigator regarding assessment of success and ideas for utilizing different approaches to reach and interact with the community to help study coordinators reach potential participants. Assemble periodic (weekly, quarterly, annual) reports and/or newsletters for assigned projects. (10%).

  • Coordinate major activities of laboratory/ research. Design and implement research activities for recruitment. Provide monthly and yearly updates for relevant research project participants. Develop monthly newsletters and distribute, as needed, to participating research partners and communities. (15%)
  • Perform the most complex quantitative analytical procedures. Analyze data to write reports and research papers. Analyze results to be able to explain analysis and results in lay terms to inform potential participants, communities (particularly underserved communities) about the research. (10%)
  • Teach or instruct others in research techniques. Teach students and trainees research techniques for recruitment and enrollment of participants. Draft lay summaries of in-press and newly published papers for faculty and trainees. Draft research statements for faculty and trainees. Draft content that illustrates ongoing examples of intra/inter-departmental and intra/inter-institutional research collaborations and initiatives. Develop and provide graphics for presentations. (10%)
  • Assist in developing procedures, coordinate information with others as needed. Develop and implement strategies and procedures to successfully recruit participants for multiple studies. This includes creating media content for NIH funded grants that is tailored to local regions. Develop and/or modify research-related materials for ascertainment. Coordinate with ongoing communications activities for research projects across the medical school and university. Provide content for social media outreach for research and participant educational activities. Review and update content on the research websites and social media on a weekly basis for multiple research project websites. (38%)
  • May supervise research assistants, trainees, and students.
Provide ongoing supervision for trainee research projects. (6%) * Co-author research projects. Work with principal investigator to write grant proposals. Work with trainees, students, and staff to write research papers. (6%)

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Perform other duties as assigned. (5%)

CONTACTS

Department: Actively engage faculty/staff to facilitate and promote opportunities for highlighting accomplishments. Frequent contact with the institute\xe2\x80\x99s director, faculty, and staff to maintain workflow.

University: Regular/occasional contact with other labs for collaboration. Represent the institute for computational biology and the school partners with faculty and staff across the university and affiliated hospitals on committees and task forces and on regular communications with members at all institutions.

External: Represent the research projects and Cleveland Institute for Computational Biology with external agency and professional association officials and with representatives of other similarly aligned departments and centers. Funding agencies as needed.

Students: Undergraduate and graduate students to exchange information.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

Mentor and direct the work of staff and trainees on projects. Directly supervise independent contractors and students who are employed to research and write for the website and incorporate social media in communications.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: 3 to 5 years of related experience required; prefer experience in science communication.

Education: Bachelor degree required; prefer Master\xe2\x80\x99s in relevant field.

Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.

  • Knowledge of the scientific process and ability to succinctly distill scientific results.
  • Excellent ability to develop graphics/presentations.
  • Strong organization skills: ability to multi-task, prioritize, and meet deadlines. Must demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy, time management skills, and follow-through. Must be able to work under pressure and conform to shifting priorities, demands, and timeline.
  • Effective collaborative skills: ability to lead, train, work with, and elicit cooperation from team members and staff.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively within a team. Must be highly motivated, responsible, dependable, and a self-starter. Ability to meet consistent attendance.
  • Effective problem-solving skills; must demonstrate innovation and creativity, sound judgment, and good decision-making.
WORKING CONDITIONS

Typical office environment. Travel (both domestic and international) will be required.
