Hennepin County Public Works is seeking a Senior Engineering Technician to join the Design division within the Transportation Project Delivery department. This position will work as part of a team to deliver roadway reconstruction projects with opportunities for professional and technical growth through training and working with other experienced roadway design professionals.

Location and hours:
This position is on-site and will be located at the Public Works Facility, 1600 Prairie Drive, Medina, MN 55340. There is no public transportation to this facility. Work hours are flexible between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Based on current requirements hires must live in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin.

In this position, you will:

  • Compute, balance, and check roadway geometrics, contract quantities, earthwork quantities, and cost estimates.
  • Design terrain models and storm water drainage system models using current computer software.
  • Prepare complete construction plans by applying roadway design criteria that include complex geometric layouts, developing typical construction sections, profile grades, detail design standards, and specification items; perform complex computer-aided roadway design and drafting functions.
  • Research and prepare complex engineering reports, narratives, charts, graphs, and visual aids.
  • Direct, train, and check the work of other technicians.
Need to have:
  • Five years or more experience in technical non-professional highway, land survey, geographic information systems application, or related engineering work, including specialized experience in the function performed.
  • Note: One of the following may be substituted for one year of the required experience:
  • Completion of an approved highway/civil engineering technology or land surveying training program.
  • 30 college semester credits in mathematics, geography, computer science or engineering-related technical courses.

  • Experience:
  • With terrain surface and/or roadway drainage and storm sewer design using roadway design software.
  • Directing a work team and/or coordinating work with other functional groups/disciplines.
  • Utilizing complex computer software, such as CAD (OpenRoads, InRoads, Geopak, Civil 3D or equivalent), GIS, spreadsheets, or databases.
  • Ability to:
  • Use critical thinking to make decisions based on established guidelines.
  • Read and interpret MnDOT Standard Design Manuals and Technical Memos, construction plans, specifications, and other written forms.
  • Schedule, prioritize, and balance several tasks/projects.
  • Work independently and in teams with minimal lead worker direction.
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
