Job Description


As a Senior Counsel Litigator, you will play a critical role in providing legal representation and guidance to our organization in matters related to litigation. You will be responsible for handling complex legal issues for the company, managing the litigation docket, and advising on legal strategies to protect the organization\'s interests. This role will also offer the successful candidate the opportunity to stretch by handling a small portfolio of commercial contracts.

Responsibilities:

1. Litigation Management/Case Assessment/ Settlement Negotiation:

  • Lead, oversee and manage all aspects of litigation cases, from initiation, through discovery to resolution. Assist with selection and supervision of outside counsel including negotiating fee arrangements, budgeting, forecasting, and bill review.
  • Review all pleadings, motions, and other papers prepared by outside counsel, coordinating discovery responses.
  • Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of legal claims. Engage in all aspects of pre-litigation claims including fact finding and claim analysis.
  • Assess potential risks and liabilities associated with litigation.
  • Negotiate settlements when appropriate, and draft settlement agreements.
2. Legal Strategy:
  • Coordinate with outside counsel to develop and implement effective legal strategies to achieve favorable outcomes for the organization.
  • Provide legal advice and counsel to senior management on litigation-related matters.
3. Legal Compliance:
  • Ensure the organization complies with all relevant laws and regulations.
  • Manage incoming subpoenas, and third-party requests for information.
  • Lead the management of the litigation holds process, and other related document retention related tasks.
  • Make recommendations related to legal department policies, procedures, and systems.
4. Documentation and Reporting:
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date case records and documentation.
  • Provide regular reports and updates on the status of litigation matters to senior management and related third parties, i.e., insurance carriers.
  • Prepare billing guidelines.
5. Commercial:
  • Draft, review and negotiate, author event agreements, co-promotion agreements, and other commercial contracts.
Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active license to practice law in New York.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience as a litigator, with a strong preference for experience at a law firm and in-house legal department.
  • Proven track record of managing litigation cases from complaint to resolution.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with an ability to convey complex legal principles clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of relevant laws and regulations in the industry, i.e. intellectual property, First Amendment, defamation, media, e-commerce, privacy, digital media, social media, and general commercial law.
  • Strong analytical skills, a strategic thinker with excellent judgment.
  • Experience managing litigation budgets.
  • Ability to use, train and manage internal compliance, litigation management, including experience with e-discovery platforms, and related software.
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Willingness to train on new software or learn about the impact of new technologies on the publishing industry, such as the impact of generative artificial intelligence, in real time.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The annual salary for this position is $180.000.00 - $200,000.00

The hiring salary range for this position applies to New York, California, Colorado, Washington state, and most other geographies. Starting pay for the successful applicant depends on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, tuition assistance program and PTO or, if applicable, as otherwise dictated by the appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreement.
