South Dakota State University (SDSU) is seeking a Senior Chemist to join our Water and Environmental Engineering Research Center (WEERC). WEERC conducts research, education and outreach activities through principal investigators who are faculty members in the Engineering College. WEERC projects are funded by governmental agencies, municipalities and industry and are focused on engineering solutions to water resources and environmental challenges.

Job Responsibilities: Support the activities of the WEERC by independently conducting complex and specialized chemical and biochemical analyses of water and wastewater samples submitted to the WEERC lab, developing analytical methods, maintaining analytical quality control, supervising student lab technicians, providing laboratory support to research projects in environmental engineering, developing local and regional analysis and research opportunities, maintaining certification, and providing outreach to the region regarding laboratory analysis.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Scientific methodology including principles of analytical chemistry of organic and inorganic constituents.
  • Quality assurance and compliance techniques
  • Safe laboratory practices
  • Supervisory techniques
  • Bachelors degree in chemistry or related field, preferred
Skill & Ability to:
  • Perform water and wastewater analysis of organic and inorganic constituents.
  • Maintain, calibrate, upgrade, and troubleshoot several complex instruments.
  • Schedule, collect, analyze, and report results of samples submitted to the laboratory.
  • Work with graduate students to perform research.
  • Train students in proper laboratory safety procedures
  • Design research projects and sample protocols
  • Assemble and maintain neat and legible records.
  • Follow standard scientific laboratory methods.
  • Interact with the public and water and wastewater professionals.
  • Deliver public presentations.
Required License: Valid Driver\'s License
