Job Description


Lawrence Berkeley National Lab\xe2\x80\x99s (LBNL) Information Technology Division has an opening for a ScienceIT Consultant to join the team.
In this exciting role, you will engage and advise Berkeley Lab researchers on the best use of computing technologies and state-of-the-art cyberinfrastructure (CI) systems, tools, specialized software, and applications to enable research productivity and discovery.
What You Will Do: Level 2

  • Serve as a contact and knowledgeable resource for scientists needing assistance with using computation and data in their research.
  • Working together with scientists and ScienceIT specialists, develop and translate those needs into information technology requirements.
  • Support and maintain institutional capabilities for data analysis, data management, data storage, computation, identity management, and many other IT needs expressed by scientific projects.
  • Plan, organize, track and execute projects on behalf of our Science IT customers as part of a flexible team organization.
  • Foster cross-domain community and knowledge-sharing between science teams with similar IT challenges.
  • Provide implementation support and advice on a wide range of compute, storage, networking, and data analytics capabilities.
  • Promote and assist researchers with the use of Cloud Compute Services (AWS, GCP primarily) containerization tools, etc. to scientific clients and research groups.
  • Work on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors.
  • Assist in cost & schedule estimation for the IT needs of scientific programs, as part of supporting grant applications, architecture development, or scientific program execution.
  • Develop training and teach courses to Laboratory scientists, staff, and post-docs on ScienceIT specific technology, services, or offerings.
Level 3, In addition to Level 2
  • Works on complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Networks with key contacts outside own area of expertise.
  • Serve as an expert resource in one or more of the following areas: data science, machine learning, workflow orchestration and automation, scientific domain relevant to LBNL research.

What is Required: Level 2
  • Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s Degree in Physics, Biology, Computer Science, Mathematics, Systems Engineering or a related field or equivalent training/experience with a minimum of 5 yrs related experience. Or Master\xe2\x80\x99s degree with a minimum of 3 yrs related experience. Or PhD degree with a minimum of 2 yrs related experience
  • Strong technical and problem-solving skills, including programming experience with a modern language such as Python or C++.
  • Experience using advanced scientific computing platforms such as HPC or cloud computing.
  • Experience using modern computational tools to help in solving problems relating to research computing. For example: workflow management tools such as bash scripting or SQL databases; Experience in CI/CD pipeline (including GitHub/GitLab); traditional parallel programming tools such as MPI and OpenMP; modern ML tools, such as TensorFlow, PyTorch. Experience in web software development platform Django is highly desired.
  • Experience with developing data movement and analysis pipelines in high-level scripting languages.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly and efficiently create working proof-of-concept implementations to test out ideas.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to present and disseminate solutions to clients or scientific software developments at group meetings and conferences.
Level 3, In addition to Level 2
  • Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree; or 6 years and a Master\xe2\x80\x99s degree; or equivalent experience.
  • Having wide-ranging experience, uses professional concepts and company objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a cross-disciplinary team. Ability to network and collaborate with key contacts outside their own area of expertise.

Notes:
  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • The Level 2 position is expected to pay $116,868.00 - $129,864.00 annually, which fits within the full salary range of $103,896.00 - $175,320.00 for the C70.2 Computer Systems Engineer. Salary for this position will commensurate with the final candidate\xe2\x80\x99s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
  • The Level 3 position is expected to pay $139,140.00 - $154,608.00 annually, which fits within the full salary range of $123,684.00 - $208,716.00 for the C70.3 Computer Systems Engineer. Salary for this position will commensurate with the final candidate\xe2\x80\x99s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.

  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule - a combination of teleworking and performing work on site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work schedules are dependent on business needs. Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab.
