Job Description


Maintains health files on all children as required by law or guidelines. Prepares health care plans for involved students and supervises the implementation of required health care procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.

  • Will provide one-to-one medical assistance to students that qualify.
  • Observes students on an as need basis to detect health concerns.
  • Instructs teachers on screening students for health defects.
  • Administers medication and treatment prescribed by physicians.
  • Conducts parent conferences and maintains liaison between physicians, parents and staff.
  • Makes recommendations to primary care physician on health needs of individual students.
  • Maintains up to date cumulative health records on all students requiring nursing intervention reports to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics and other agencies on student health matters.
  • Assumes authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student who has suffered an injury or emergency illness.
  • Administers first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures.
  • Implements board policy on exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases.
  • Conducts training for students related to handicap, health and hygiene.
  • Assists school personnel in maintaining sanitary standards in schools.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Holds a Bachelor\'s degree in Nursing (BSN) from a regionally accredited college or university.
Holds and maintains a current Registered Nurse license, recognized by the Delaware Board of Nursing.
Holds and maintains a valid and current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and in the use
of an automatic external defibrillator (AED).
Completes within eighteen (18) months of hire, ninety (90) clock hours of training approved by the
Department consisting of school nursing, health education, testing and screening, counseling and
guidance, and introduction to exceptional children.

An educator must also have met the following experience requirement:
Has completed a minimum of three (3) years of supervised clinical nursing experience.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATION:
License from the State of Delaware to practice as a Registered Nurse.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference; as well as fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs. Ability to plan and implement lessons based on school objectives and the needs and abilities of parents and the community. The ability to speak clearly and concisely in written and oral communication.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk and talk or hear. The employee will occasionally reach forward or above the head more than the average person. Ability to visit various buildings in the district. The employee must occasionally life and/or move and push up to 90 pounds; such as, students and students in wheelchairs. Specific vision abilities required by this ob include close vision, distance vision and depth perception.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee is frequently exposed to infection at a greater risk than the average person. The employee is directly responsible for the safety and well being of students.
