The Organization
Oregon's Commission for the Blind (OCB) provides services to Oregonians who experience vision loss and need specialized training and support to live full and productive lives. OCB's Emerging Leaders Summer Work Experience Program (EL-SWEP) is a six-week residential program for youth ages 16-20 designed to build work experience and independent living skills. EL-SWEP students engage in activities and classes designed to activate and enhance each individual's sense of self-worth and self-reliance. We help students build confidence, continue their education, and be a fully connected part of their communities. Residential dorm staff work hands-on with youth at EL-SWEP to develop the skills they will need to live independently in the future. As assistant dorm manager with EL-SWEP, you will get the chance to make a meaningful change in the lives of young adults and their staff.
Dorm Staff at EL-SWEP will support students with disabilities in their dorms, in activities of daily living, and in recreational activities. As assistant dorm manager, you will be part of the EL-SWEP Leadership Team and will direct staff as needed and work directly with students yourself. This position is Semi-Seasonal: Full Time from June-August and Part Time August-June.
The purpose of this position is to assist the dormitory manager with supervising activities/services within EL-SWEP. These supervisory duties include; Managing the program, recruiting and hiring staff for EL-SWEP, supervising and arranging training for staff, assigning work schedules, monitoring work and evaluating staff performance, resolving disputes, finding substitute workers when necessary, sharing on call responsibility with dorm manager (manager ultimately responsible) to supervise the 24/7 program during the six weeks the program is operating, developing procedures consistent with agency policies, ensuring all staff reports are collected and reviewed weekly, and overseeing and ensuring all final reports are delivered no later than two weeks following the end of the program. Overtime is offered for hours worked over 40 each week at 1.5x.
Major Duties:
Provide daily supervision for staff and students attending EL-SWEP programs and ensuring the program runs safely and effectively.
Provide proper documentation to OCB financial team for EL-SWEP expenditures.
Supervise EL-SWEP activities.
Maintain and coordinate staffing schedules.
Collect, review, and submit weekly reports for EL-SWEP program to Vocational Rehab Director and designated OCB staff.
Assist in facilitating weekly staff meetings and other Staff/client/parent meetings (as needs arise) for EL-SWEP program.
Program curriculum includes but is not limited to: adjustment to blindness, orientation and mobility (white cane travel/transportation training), techniques of daily living, cooking, personal/organizational management, job skill/aptitude assessment/training, supervised work experience and life/work planning. Expert staff works with persons who are visually impaired to instill confidence, develop leadership, and build skills in all aspects of day-to-day life: from grocery shopping to reading to surfing the Web.
Qualifications and Skills:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience working with youth and/or populations with disabilities required
Experience working with individuals with vision loss preferred but not necessary
Supervisory experience preferred
Possess computer skills, including MS Office, Excel, Outlook, and Teams
Communicate effectively with students and staff verbally and in written form
Possess basic cooking and cleaning skills
Driver's license and insurance preferred
Lift up to 25lbs
Have patience and flexibility to adjust instructional approach as needed based on students' skill level
Maintain professionalism with company tech
Make decisions in rapidly changing situations
Be able to maintain confidentiality in performing assigned tasks
Coordinate with organization personnel and policies
Ensure harmony with staff, students, and community members
