Job Description

Incumbents in one of these classifications, where a Master's Degree is required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 2% of their monthly base pay. Those where a Doctoral Degree is a required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 3% of their monthly base pay. Individuals with both a Master's and Doctoral Degree will be given the best benefit in relation to salary shall only be eligible for only one amount.



This position supports the California Department of Public Health's (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by acting as the direct supervisor of the research scientist staff in the Genetic Disease Screening Program (GDSP), Laboratory Services Branch (LSB), a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) certified genetic screening laboratory. The Research Scientist Supervisor (RSS) II (Chemical Sciences) provides scientific technical expertise and administrative guidance and direction to scientific and non-scientific personnel who are developing (or assisting with the development of) functions within the Genetic Disease Screening Laboratory Training Program, which aims to develop and maintain the knowledge of staff who perform critical work to support the prenatal and newborn screening testing in California Department of Public Health (CDPH) laboratories within the California Public Health Laboratory Program. Duties include working and collaborating with the training committee as well as various coordinators, trainers, and partners to ensure timely delivery of training and laboratory materials and supplies, completion of documents, communication, and reporting of training updates.

This position also collaborates with CDPH labs, GDSP's Operational Support Section (OSS), vendors, guest trainers, trainees, and other training program partners for the collaborative training program and other special projects. The scope of work requires following laboratory standard operating procedures, proper communication, and adherence to the CDPH and GDSP LSB policies and procedures for smooth operations of the laboratory following state and CLIA compliance required in this area. The incumbent provides scientific technical expertise and consultation to departmental management and others as requested

The incumbent works under the broad administrative direction of the Research Scientist Manager, Chief of the Laboratory Services Branch.

Travel may be required for this position. Reimbursement for travel takes into consideration an employee's designated headquarters, as reflected in the duty statement, and is subject to regulations and bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the designated headquarters office will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
