Overview:

Chemical Process Scale-Up (CPSU) Group within the Manufacturing Science Division (MSD) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking to fill a part-time R&D Associate position to work in the areas of technoeconomic analysis (TEA) and environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) in the areas of CO2 capture and conversion and biomass conversion. Preference is given to candidates with a demonstrated track record of performing TEA & LCA in DOE programs, experience writing reports and publications in DOE programs and leading teams focused on energy efficiency and renewable energy. The successful candidate will conduct research independently but collaboratively with experimental scientists and excellent communication skills are essential. The chosen candidate is expected to contribute to major programs in the areas of biomass conversion to fuels and co-products, chemical manufacturing, CO2 capture and utilization, and other clean energy chemical processes.

The position is in the Manufacturing Sciences Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The successful candidate will opportunities to collaborate with a diverse range of staff across ORNL. The successful candidate will be expected to serve as the technical communicator to sponsors as well as interface with collaborating scientists at other national labs, industry, and universities. Representative activities include: developing strategies for defining and meeting long term goals relevant to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) programs, engaging DOE sponsors, developing R&D proposals, providing technical and strategic vision and leadership in developing a portfolio of cross-cutting modeling and simulation research by coordinating with a diverse multi-disciplinary team.

Main Responsbilities / Job Duties:

  • Conduct pioneering research in TEA and LCA of complex chemical processes including catalyst systems, chemical processes, and thermochemical/electrochemical conversion processes for renewable clean energy.
  • Develop new projects and extended proposals beyond the scope of currently sponsored project(s).
  • Possess excellent communication skills and be able to proactively communicate with other scientists/engineers internally and externally to build teams
  • Have a track record of excellent mentorship of postdocs/students.
  • Be responsible for preparing, presenting, and reporting research results and publishing scientific results in key peer-reviewed journals.
  • Be responsible for budget planning and management.
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
  • Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.

Basic Qualifications:
  • A PhD in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science or related discipline with a minimum of two years of experience in TEA and LCA of applied engineering processes and systems.
  • A record of excellence in TEA and LCA research as evidenced through peer-reviewed journal publications, patents, or industry/commercial impact.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate in English to an international scientific audience.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and interact effectively with a broad range of colleagues.
  • Ability to function well in a dynamic research environment, set priorities to accomplish tasks on time, and adapt to ever-changing needs.
