Job Description


The American Public Power Association (APPA) is looking for a Research and Development Program Assistant to provide a variety of support services to the Research and Development team within the Technical & Operations Services Department.

Please note: This is not a remote position. Candidates must be in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area. APPA offers a flexible work schedule for full-time employees, and the option for telework is available after 2 months of employment (with supervisor approval).

  • Provides general administrative support for the Research and Development team, such as managing listservs, committee lists, coordination of billing and invoices, planning and organizing meetings, preparing and sending letters.
  • Assists with the planning and implementation of the Reliable Public Power Provider (RP3), Smart Energy Provider (SEP), eReliability Tracker (eRT), and Energy Transition Community (ETC). Responsible for attendee registration and confirmation, entering records into association customer management database, preparing, copying, and distributing handouts, and assisting on meeting logistics.
  • Serves as a first point of contact for APPA members and nonmembers and ensures a satisfactory outcome to their questions and comments.
  • Works with the DEED program coordinator and assists, as needed, on day-to-day DEED program activities.
  • Develops a thorough knowledge and understanding of APPA, its membership, and the role of APPA as a service organization.
  • Assists with research on technical, regulatory, engineering, environmental, energy, and related issues as needed.
  • Assists with production, proofreading, and writing of publications, newsletters, and other materials for print and other media, as assigned.
  • Provides administrative support and financial/contractual tracking for cooperative agreements, grants, and other research-related projects as needed.
  • Assists with marketing, emails, and other communications.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Degree from a 4-year college or university required.
  • 1-3 years of practical experience in general office procedures.
  • Experience in energy sector/member utility and/or trade association preferred.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently to carry out assigned duties.
  • Accuracy and strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and handle a variety of tasks.
  • In-depth knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient internet research skills.
  • Familiarity with database management and web application development processes.
  • Strong ability to analyze and report on survey data.
  • Ability to learn and utilize a variety of software platforms.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate and facilitate a major meeting with multiple activities.
  • Ability to travel up to 20% of the time in and out of town.
