This critical position offers a competitive package ($130-170K base salary + bonus + equity) plus the opportunity to join a fun and fast-paced work environment with significant upside.
Role Overview As a key leader on the Operations Team, you will be responsible for the ongoing optimization of the Company\xe2\x80\x99s agronomic strategy to generate maximum yield in an operationally sustainable manner. The Research Agronomist enables desirable outcomes through research, experimental trials, partnerships with universities and other scientific bodies, and collaboration with the farming teams, while also acting as a key partner and resource in providing farm-specific support for challenges encountered with the climate, soil, water, pests, and nutrients. Additionally, the Research Agronomist plays a key role in the strategic planning and diligence work involved in expanding the Company\xe2\x80\x99s crop portfolio and regional presence.
What will you be doing? As a high-growth company, roles will evolve, but initially, the key responsibilities of this role are:
Optimize Agronomic Strategy (80% of the time):
  • Key contributor in assisting the VP-Operations and Head of Farming in establishing the overall agronomic and operational strategy and building the agronomic road map to achieve maximum yields and sustainable outcomes
  • Understand the weather conditions, soil profiles, farming challenges, and pest issues associated with the Company\'s farms and crops
  • Leads the ideation and execution of experimental trials to achieve key company objectives and documents procedures, results, and conclusions
  • Monitors the effects of the soil characteristics, water sources, water availability, pests, and weather conditions on tree growth and updates our playbooks in response to these factors to enhance tree health and yield production.
  • Partners with the Farm management teams to evaluate soil and tissue samples to determine nutrient needs and make recommendations for fertility programs to address those needs.
  • Leads Company efforts to evaluate crop year performance, makes recommendations for ongoing improvements, and updates company best practices
  • Stays abreast of industry trends and innovations that would benefit the Company and investigates the feasibility of applying new scientific principles and products across the asset portfolio.
  • Partner with the asset management and leadership team to evaluate opportunities to expand the crop portfolio and regional footprint.

Internal and External Stakeholder Management (20% of the time):
  • Build and maintains strong relationships with Asset Managers, Farm Managers, and other cross-functional support partners to proactively share necessary information, develop best practices, and work through agronomic and operational problems quickly and sustainably.
  • Function as a core team member and subject matter expert in working sessions designed to cross-functionally improve agronomy outcomes
  • Participate in all team meetings, including but not limited to, operations team meetings, weekly check-ins with VP-Operations, twice monthly All Hands, monthly agronomy meetings, and monthly farm performance reviews.
  • Generate buy-in from the farm teams on all agronomic changes and program development
  • Regularly communicate with relevant industry and educational institutions to initiate research projects, problem-solve farm-specific issues, and learn of the latest methods for maximizing yields and controlling disease, weeds, and insects.
  • Manage relationships with vendors and seeks support when assistance or services are necessary

  • Master\xe2\x80\x99s degree or Ph.D. in agronomy, plant or soil science, or related fields from an accredited university or experience equivalent required.
  • Experience identifying and diagnosing tree and soil diseases and insects impacting permanent crops. Experience in almonds and/or pistachios preferred - organic crop experience a bonus!
  • Track record of designing and executing experimental trials and building processes that drive positive outcomes.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills coupled with strong relationship-building and networking skills.
  • Strong analytic and strategic problem-solving ability supported by superior planning, organization, and prioritization skills.
  • Excited by technology and innovation with basic usage of Microsoft Excel, Word, and other professional software programs.
  • English/Spanish Bilingual preferred but not required.
