Job Summary

The Vacation Relief Powder Packaging Operator runs all aspects of the powder packaging operations including bulk powder bagger, tote filler, palletizer. Support and follow USDA, SQF / QA, GMP, HACCP, Safety policies and procedures, and production needs. "Food Safety and Quality" are the responsibilities of this position. In the absence of a Tote Filler Operator, responsibilities will be covered by another Tote Filler Operator.



Essential Functions

Responsible for the adjustments to the filler that will ensure maximum production without compromising quality. Responsible for ensuring all totes produced during the shift are tied and sealed properly and meet customer requirements. Responsible for taking samples of any product run during their shift, as per proper procedure. Provides an accurate accounting of production. Must be able to fill 8 to 10 totes per hour. Ensure tote labels match product being packaged and that tote bags are coded correctly. Must complete regular weight checks and ensure that all documentation is filled out correctly. Must run each Ava-Pac at near capacity of 7-8 bags per minute. Must palletize, transport, and stack finished pallets with forklift from all three packaging lines at a satisfactory pace to keep all machines running at required speed. Ensure bag labels match product being packaged and that bags are coded correctly. Inspect one bag after every 180 bags produced for proper outer seal, inner seal, and weight. This information is to be documented daily on the appropriate log sheet. Responsible for the general cleanliness of the powder room and its equipment. The powder room must remain USDA inspection ready at all times. Required to remove pallets from conveyors, hand stack bags of powder, load pallets to the pallet magazine, and assist with any other related work. Must have the ability to troubleshoot problems and be persistent until a solution is found. Report immediately to foreperson or supervisor of any damage, irregular activity, or unsafe conditions concerning equipment. Follow SQF, GMP, and HACCP policies and procedures. Follow all safety and working rules. Must have the ability to get along with co-workers, management personnel, customers, vendors, and employees in accordance with the company policies and working rules while ensuring harmonious and conducive work environment. Maintain a positive attitude and contribute towards a quality environment. Excellent regular full time attendance in support of company objectives. Use initiative and judgment in making decisions, keeping with California Dairies, Inc. best interests. Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Education and/or Experience

A high school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) is preferred. Excellent written and verbal skills. Basic computational skills required. Simple math reasoning required

Language Skills

English is required as the written and spoken language.



Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Must possess or be able to acquire and maintain a forklift operator license.

Equipment

Personal protective equipment including, but not limited to hearing protection, bump caps, hair and beard nets, gloves, and safety glasses must be used in the performance of duties. Proper lifting techniques must be employed at all times. General knowledge of manufacturing equipment and processes.

Physical Demands

The physical requirements outlined here represent those necessary for successful performance of this position's core responsibilities. Sitting/Standing/Walking:

The operator stands through their shift. The operator walks on uneven concrete and tiled surfaces.

Lifting/Carrying:

The operator lifts 51-75 pounds on a frequent basis and less than 50 pounds on an occasional basis. Two or more employees complete lifts of greater than 75 pounds.

Pushing/Pulling:

The operator pushes/pulls filled bags when palletizing and empty pallets when stacking them. The operator pushes/pulls while using brooms, vacuums, air hoses, and rags during cleanup duties.

Bending/Stooping:

The operator bends and stoops occasionally throughout the workday, for varying lengths of time. The operator bends/stoops to tie powder bags with liners, re-bag powdered milk, hand palletize, during daily cleanup duties, when sweeping, vacuuming, and wiping the floors, walls, and equipment.

Squatting/Kneeling/Crawling:

The operator may assume a combination of these positions during cleanup duties, including kneeling on the floor and crawling under equipment. Twisting/Turning: The operator twists/turns at the waist when feeding empty bags and pallets into the packaging and palletizing machines. When equipment breaks down, palletizing is done by hand, and the operator bends, turns, and twists while lifting and stacking 55 pound bags on the pallet. The operator may be required to work in tight spaces.

Climbing/Balancing:

During the shift, the operator may climb 50 steps to the top of the powder bin. In addition, the operator will periodically climb up and down steps to filler platform and to do metal detection inspections. The operator may work on an enclosed catwalk. Reaching: The operator reaches below shoulder level at least 2/3 of the normal workday when operating the palletizing equipment. The remaining 1/3 of the day, the operator may reach at or above shoulder level while adjusting equipment, feeding pallets into magazines, during clean up duties, and climbing vertical ladders. When palletizing equipment malfunctions, the operator may help hand stack 55 lb. bags to 5 to 6 feet high.

Grasping/Manipulating:

Frequent use of the hands and fingers is required.
