JOB DESCRIPTION:

An Inpatient Psychiatric nurse works on both of our mental health care units: a 16-bed locked unit that cares for both voluntary & involuntary individuals and a 12-bed locked unit designed primarily for voluntary individuals requiring acute mental health care. Responsibilities include providing direct, acute inpatient care, improving the mental health care experience through collaboration as an active member of the multidisciplinary team, promoting patient engagement in care planning, and empowering for shared decision-making in treatment. Our department serves patients with a variety of mental health diagnoses along with medical comorbidities. Nursing responsibilities are performed in accordance with hospital policies and procedures. Our RNs actively participate in treatment plans, treatment rounds, psychiatric assessment and care, along with medical/surgical assessment and care. This position is part of the multidisciplinary team comprised of MHT/LNAs, RNs, Providers, Social Worker/Case Managers, and Group Therapists. This position includes precepting for the orientation of new nursing staff and supports the clinical education of nursing students from local universities. May train to Charge RN as required.

This is a bargaining union position.

Our Inpatient Psychiatric nurses are offered continued education including Psychiatric and Nursing Grand Rounds, in-services and other unit based offerings. We support our nurses with obtaining their Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing certifications. Our nurses also have the opportunity to advance through the Clinical Advancement and Recognition Program (CARP).

External candidates are eligible for a one-time signing bonus of $10,000 (prorated for part time roles). A relocation package of $9,200 (pro-rated for part-time roles) is also available for relocating applicants.

EDUCATION:

Current RN licensure or compact licensure recognized by the State of Vermont required. The University of Vermont Medical Center is moving toward an all Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) workforce. All external candidates hired into, or current employees promoted to, a RN position will be required to obtain their BSN as outlined in the terms of their offer letter.

EXPERIENCE:

Appropriate experience in specific clinical area. Varies by unit.

Psychiatric nursing experience preferred.

Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills are essential. Must have the ability to relate and motivate effectively with a diverse patient population and clinical staff.

Greater than one year of nursing experience.
