Job Description

The Reference Lab Supervisor oversees the daily operations of the reference laboratory support functions, including preparation of cases for Immunohistochemistry (IHC), Molecular testing, and Pathology Consultations. This role ensures timely and accurate data entry, quality control of specimens, and proper distribution of cases to pathologists. The Supervisor is responsible for training and guiding staff, maintaining workflow efficiency, and ensuring compliance with laboratory standards and regulatory requirements.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Supervise the daily activities of the reference lab clerks, ensuring timely and accurate preparation of cases for IHC, Molecular testing, and consultations.

Monitor and evaluate specimen orders, ensuring that all clinical data is accurately entered into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).

Identify and resolve missing or incorrect information in documentation or system records; escalate issues as needed.

Coordinate the receipt, processing, and return of outside materials, ensuring proper tracking and communication with external partners.

Oversee technical and non-technical procedures related to specimen processing and ensure adherence to standard operating procedures.

Operate and ensure the maintenance of automated and semi-automated equipment, troubleshooting issues and coordinating repairs when necessary.

Train new employees and provide ongoing coaching, support, and performance feedback to staff.

Communicate deficiencies in specimen integrity, paperwork, or system data to appropriate personnel and implement corrective actions.

Prepare and review materials and slides for tumor board presentations and ensure timely availability.

Organize, maintain, and periodically audit filing systems for accuracy, compliance, and accessibility.

Collaborate with laboratory leadership to develop and implement improvements to filing systems and workflow processes.

Participate in quality assurance initiatives and support compliance with regulatory inspections.

Perform periodic inspections of stored materials to ensure accurate placement and proper condition.

Other duties and special projects as assigned.


Education:

High School Diploma required

Associates Degree Preferred


Experience / Abilities:

Minimum of 2-3 years of laboratory or pathology office experience, with at least 1 year in a lead or supervisory role preferred.

Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills

Ability to management multiple priorities

Excellent attention to detail

Ability to work in a team environment
