Job Description


Purpose

The City of Newport is seeking an experienced, dedicated, and professional individual to fill the position of Recreation Leader - Sports. This individual will assist with the research and development of safe, healthy, and quality sport, recreation and leisure programs for the community. Assist with needs assessments to determine the programs that are required, and create and implement the most appropriate programs. Help ensure that a wide range of sport, recreation, and cultural programs are provided. Monitor the care and maintenance of equipment and facilities. Promote programs as well as volunteer and leadership opportunities. Provide training as required.
This position is part-time, and will require the ability to work a varied schedule, including evenings and weekends.

A sign-on bonus of $500 will be paid to successful hires at the end of the first full payroll cycle.
A retention bonus of $750 will be paid after a full twelve (12) months of employment.

Qualifications

MINIMUM/MANDATORY EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the duties as described. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be a high school equivalency, AND 6 months related experience.

KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of principles, terminology, techniques, methods, supplies, equipment, basic rules, and skills involved in a variety of athletic activities and recreation programs. Knowledge of techniques in supervising various recreational activities. Knowledge of maintenance/use/care of facilities and equipment. Knowledge of the philosophy and objectives in sports, and the purpose, use, and benefit of various elements of specific practices used during recreation and sports programs. Basic record keeping practices.

SKILLS: Skill in the use of personal computers, various related software programs, standard office equipment, and parks and recreation equipment. Strong time management and organization skills. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Strong customer service skills. Good judgement. Analytical, problem-solving, and listening skills. Effective team building and conflict resolution skills. Exceptional interpersonal skills. Strong oral and written communications skills with a variety of audiences.

ABILITIES: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city management, employees, Council members, patrons, participants, other entities, and the general public. Ability to effectively supervise staff. Ability to organize, instruct, and supervise recreation programs efficiently. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with individuals and groups. Ability to honor the confidentiality required of this position. Ability to multi-task and to work independently as well as within a team environment. Ability to follow oral and written directions. Ability to interpret staff and participant needs, and make recommendations. Ability to build partnerships with entities in the city and the surrounding communities. Ability to work in an environment that may be busy and noisy with frequent interruptions. Physical ability to perform the essential job functions. Ability to work a varied schedule including evenings and weekends.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Valid Oregon Driver\'s License at time of hire.

Certification in Infant and Child First Aid/CPR within 3 months of hire.

Adult First Aid/CPR/AED within 6 months of hire.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, communicate, reach, and manipulate objects. The position requires mobility, including the ability to frequently lift or move materials up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift or move materials up to 100 pounds. The position requires the ability to operate a motorized vehicle. Manual dexterity and coordination are required approximately 35% of the work period to operate such equipment as computers, keyboards, telephones, and standard office equipment. The position requires the mobility to interact with and use parks and recreation equipment. The ability to lift, carry, and manage equipment and supplies, and participate in and train others in the rules of sport. The individual may be required to work odd or long hours at a time to complete special requests or projects, or to participate in or coordinate evening activities. The Recreation Leader may be participating in and leading strenuous physical activities, both indoors and out. A varied schedule is required.

WORKING CONDITIONS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work location is both indoors and outdoors where most work occurs in a recreational/gymnasium or park setting. The Recreation Leader is expected to oversee and monitor recreational, leisure, and sporting events in all weather conditions.
