Position Information

The Recreation Department of the City of Pittsburg, CA provides programs and services that enhance the quality of life for the community through aquatics, Senior Center, Small World Park, and other recreational activities and events. The Recreation Department is seeking to fill Recreation Leader II vacancies in any of the following areas: Events, Small World Park, Youth Sports, Buchanan Swim Center and Youth Activities Leaders. Some assignments may handle rental fees for facilities and meeting rooms.

The City of Pittsburg is a full-service city following the council-manager form of government. We have about 290 full time employees and about 350 employees total (depending on the season). Pittsburg is currently organized into the following departments: City Management, Community and Economic Development (Building, Economic Development, Code Enforcement, and Planning), Community Services (Housing Authority, Pittsburg Power Company, and the Successor Agency to the former Redevelopment Agency), Recreation, Human Resources, Finance, Police, and Public Works (Engineering, Operations/Maintenance, Utilities, Facilities, Parks, and Water Treatment). Fire Protection services are provided by the Contra Costa County Consolidated Fire Department. Pittsburg\'s total budget for FY 21/22 is $225.9 million and a General Fund budget of $51.3 million.

Examples of Duties

Ball Field Supervisor: Supervise athletic fields during activities, such as: youth flag football and youth basketball. Training and supervision of subordinate staff. Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and one year experience as a Recreation Leader.

Park Aide/Ride Operator: Assist in park operations: general park clean-up (restrooms, empty trash containers, raking, sweeping & manual watering); play equipment safety checks; ride operator and ride safety check (minimum age 18 years); set-up and take down of private and special events; take picnic site reservations and ticket booth operation. Interact well with small children and provide excellent customer service. Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver\'s License.

Pool Supervisor: Responsible for assisting the pool managers in the seasonal operation of the Sullenberger Swim Center in: supervising employees, keeping supplies and the snack bar stocked, running in-services, supervising recreational swim sessions, assisting in the preparation of materials, scheduling additional training dates as necessary; assist in running programs, special events and the American Red Cross "Learn to Swim" programs; scheduling and organizing pool rentals; preparing daily and weekly attendance reports, and providing excellent customer service in the context of applying and enforcing rules and regulations that govern the health, safety and welfare of patrons. Requires the possession of a valid and current American Red Cross CPR/FPR, First Aid, Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard Training certificates. Previous lifeguard and instruction experience.

Referee: Officiate youth basketball and football games for ages 8-12. Communicate with coaches, parents and players on rules and direction of activity. Must have basic understanding of the game and rules of football and basketball.

Senior Lifeguard: Rescue swimmers in distress; enforce pool rules; administer first aid, perform general maintenance of pool and surrounding area. Provide instruction and supervision to Lifeguards. Requires an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Responding to Emergency training. Refined swimming skills and the ability to swim 20 laps; ability to deal with stressful situations. Six months previous experience as a Lifeguard.

Water Safety Instructor: Provide swimming instruction to all age groups and ability levels; supervise and instruct Swim Aides; maintain records of student progress; work effectively on a team. Requires an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, First Aid and CPR training. Refined swimming skills and the ability to swim 20 laps. Minimum age 16 yrs.
